Every spring semester the ladies of Pi Beta Phi gather to celebrate the twelve amazing women who found our organization over a hundred and thirty years ago. Founder’s day is a special day focused on remembering where we started and how much our organization has grown since.
It really helps make people realize how big of an organization we are part of. This year the luncheon was held at the Brookside Golf and Country Club, who worked with us to make the event one of the best yet. Each year Pi Phi invites the alumnae who have been in Pi Phi for over fifty years for special recognition. They receive a special pin referred as the golden arrow for their years of dedication. We get to hear all about their time at Ohio State, what being in Pi Phi has meant to them and what they’ve accomplished in their lives. Many of them had inspirational stories and lived exciting lives all over the country.
This year we had twenty five recipients of the golden arrow and each one of them would make a great role model. One women in particular stood out and actually received a special surprise at founder’s day. This woman was Sally Huber, who in 1965 with the help of her boyfriend created the first ever Brutus Buckeye. It was made out of paper mache and was constructed on the Pi Phi house’s front lawn. Many of the alumni remembered watching her do it and said it was a sight to see. After years of being away from Ohio State and from her creation she was finally reunited with him on founders day. Since the time Sally created Brutus he has been modified into the mascot that we all know and love so much. All of the alumni were thrilled to see Brutus and instantly made us sing Carmen Ohio. It was great to see that even though they graduated long ago they will always be Buckeyes and Pi Phi’s at heart.
