Celebrate, Remember, And Fight Back

To some, it's just a walk, for most, it means so much more.

For the last 3 years, my sister and I made a team for the local for Relay for Life to honor my Mom's fight, cleverly named "Amy's Army". I always participated when I was younger, but once I had a personal purpose that was near and dear to me, it meant so much more. Within in the past 3 years, our team alone has raised between $5,000-$8,000, and we're not even one of the biggest teams out there. When walking around the track, there are facts and stats that I wanted to post here.

Since 1985, more than $3 billion has been raised from Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

In 2009, more than 5,000 communities have participated, I can't even imagine how many communities have joined the fight now.

Relay for Life is the largest non-profit organization in the entire world.

Relay for Life is present in 19 other countries outside the United States.

More than anything else, Relay is meant to Celebrate the fight that too many people have had to fight on a daily basis. They have multiple ceremonies for the survivors and recognize their fight, for how long they've been a survivor, and how long they fought for.

They also weigh heavily on Remembering those who lost the fight. Almost every single person I know has lost someone to cancer, and one day, more organizations like Relay for life will make the research possible that people won't have to lose their loved ones anymore.

Lastly, Relay teaches us to Fight Back. Against this disease, against the loss, against everything that prevents people from living their best life. We are making such huge strides and getting so close to never need to use the word Cancer again, we just need to keep fighting.

To some, it's just a walk, for most, it means so much more.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
