Having a cat (really any pet at all) has been proven to make people happier and more relaxed. As I write this my cat is jumping across my laptop and latching onto my bare skin with her claws, so it’s a little difficult to stand by this point, but I promise you that science has backed it up.
Cats are better for the environment.
What? Can you believe it? When I first read this I realized that I had never actually thought about my pet’s carbon footprint. Of course, the stats may vary when it comes to a toy breed, however studies have shown that over the course of its lifetime a medium sized dog will leave a larger carbon footprint than an SUV. If you’re faced with the decision, I’d recommend taking the dog. You can’t snuggle an SUV.
Cats are great for cardiovascular health.
In 2008 researchers announced that owning a cat could release your chances of having a heart attack by one third. Maybe all the mini heart attacks your curious kitten gives you on a daily basis makes your heart stronger?
They are excellent companions.
Everyone feels the need to care for a living creature — it’s just part of the human experience. Although when people think of companions they more often think of dogs, cats have been proven to be just as compassionate as the cuddliest dog. Women, especially, are benefitted by these feline love-bugs. Cats are very intelligent creatures (duh) and those times that you feel like they’ll remember that time you stepped on their foot? They are most definitely filing that away. However, studies have shown that cats remember when their owners respond to their bids for attention, and are more likely to reciprocate when their owner makes a bid.
Cats can fend off insomnia.
Kind of. Studies and polls in the UK have shown that women sleep better with their cat than with a partner. Probably because the cat won’t steal the covers, or accidentally hit you in the nose, or snore like a freight train. But that’s just one girl’s guess.
Finally, not necessarily scientific as much as it is my own experience, cats can bring endless joy and entertainment. Before my kitten found me, I didn’t want to come home. I didn’t want to be in my apartment, but I didn’t feel like I had anywhere to go. When I wasn’t catching up on school or work I was plagued with ennui. Having this psychotic little floof-ball in the house has completely turned my world around in the most wonderful way. She’s my tiny feline soulmate, and I wouldn’t trade her for the world.
