With the NHL Draft late last week, I didn't get to give my take on possibly the dumbest draft choice that I've ever witnessed.
To give you some background, this year's draft class wasn't anything special. There are a few kids that might shine late in the year, but no Auston Matthews or Patrick Kanes this year. What the Buffalo Sabres did, though, is inexcusable. I don't care if you have to pick a kid that you've never seen play before the combine. Why in God's name would you take Casey Mittelstadt?
Casey (I refuse to use his last name more than I have to because that's just a nightmare) is 18 years old and, despite being drafted this year, will probably be in the USHL for a few more years and then the Sabres minor league team, the Rochester Americans. Me saying a few years is being generous.
Let's talk about his specialties. Die By The Blade, an SBNation affiliate focused on the Sabres, said, "But strength is not his game, at just 18 years old, Mittelstadt's game is more about speed, skill..." and more garbage about what all hockey players have.
Saying "strength isn't his game" is putting it lightly. The 6'1, 199-pound 18-year-old couldn't finish one pull up.
You have to admire the look of effort on his face as he can't even get that cowlick above the bar. As if that isn't bad enough, Casey could only manage one rep of a 160-pound bench. I doubt that I could get even one rep of 160, but then again I'm not trying to showcase myself for professional hockey teams.
I'm not saying you need to be physical and big to make it in the NHL. Brad Marchand, Bruins winger, is 5'9" and 181 pounds and had 85 points. Cam Atkinson, Jackets winger, is 5'8" and 182 pounds and had 62 points. Neither of them really lay anyone out, but they still have success.
Casey also turned down the USHL for a stretch to try to win a state title with his high school team, which they ended up losing. When his high school season wasn't active, he did play USHL and did fairly well, but compared to other players in the league, his time was chump change.
I understand that being in high school and grinding for that title game is incredible and you want to do it with your brothers, but why jeopardize your draft placement to play against a bunch of kids who are nowhere near your skill level?
The Hockey News said, "...Mittelstadt tore up the high school ranks to the tune of 64 points in 25 games." WHAT ELSE DO YOU EXPECT? He's good enough to be a top 10 pick in the NHL Draft, only a dream for 90% of the kids he's playing against, and you're going to point out that he did well? Any other shocking things? I think I heard water is wet the other day.
I'm going to end this with some truth. I've played hockey for one intramural season as a goalie. I was pretty bad (but ladies, I still played and I wasn't the worst) and it was incredibly hard. Mittelstadt has played hockey his entire life, striving for the NHL; a goal that he achieved when he was drafted.
In my opinion, there were definitely better picks for the Sabres. But at the end of the day, I'm sitting in my bed bashing him while he's out there getting paid to play a sport he loves.
