The 2017 Oscars did not disappoint with the entertainment value only a live broadcast of all the top Hollywood stars can bring. With the most notable snafu being the mix up with Best Picture between "La La Land" and "Moonlight", however also making headlines is the controversy of Casey Affleck's win for Best Actor. Many viewers noticed several of Affleck's peers and even the presenter of the award, Brie Larson, not applauding his win. This would be due to the sexual harassment allegations against Affleck dating back to 2010.
Casey Affleck's win as Best Actor for his role in "Manchester by the Sea" has been met with backlash from all over including his peer in the film industry. Most notably Brie Larson, winner of Best Actress at last year's Oscars, who is a fervent advocate for sexual assault victims. The allegations against him, made by producer Amanda White and cinematographer Magdalena Gorka who worked with Affleck, include unwanted advances, berating comments, and sexual innuendo (The Guardian). While Casey denied all claims and threatened to countersue, the cases were settled outside of court with mediation. No other details were released about the case and when asked about it, Affleck said neither party could discuss details.
While the case was settled and long over, this furthers the notion that men who are accused of assault and harassment can still have a healthy and prosperous career, despite the allegations against them. Some compared Affleck to President Trump, while others condemned his nomination and further win (Huff Post). While Affleck's performance in "Manchester by the Sea" was Oscar worthy, his behavior on and off the set should be considered when assessing his win.
