"We knew it was special, for sure,” said country music star Carrie Underwood said about her hit song Something In the Water. This gorgeous blonde made her debut on the fourth season of The American Idol by singing I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt. After that, she became a country sensation. Releasing several hit songs, some even reaching number one on the charts. Carrie Underwood’s most well-known songs include Before He Cheats, Blown Away, Just a Dream, All-American Girl and cannot forget “Cowboy Casanova”.
Although, there are two songs I did not mention that are worthy of some recognition. Both of these songs reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country and Christian songs. Jesus Take the Wheel was produced and released in 2005 and Something in The Water in 2014. These two songs not only have a great country tune but Godly presents. It is quite beautiful how Carrie Underwood has let her Christian faith influence her music. Never noticed it before? Here are some lyrics from those songs that you may have never connected to the Lord before, but now you will…
Couldn't fight back the tears so I fell on my knees Saying, "God, if you're there come and rescue me."
They said, "Just a little faith, it'll all get better." So I followed that preacher man down to the river and now I'm changed
Save me from this road I'm on, Jesus take the wheel
And now I'm singing along to amazing grace Can't nobody wipe this smile off my face
Take it from my hands Cause I can't do this on my own
Thank God almighty, I saw the light
Also, her song Temporary Home released in 2009 was inspired by “The Purpose Driven Life”, a novel by Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church in Lake Forrest, California. Written inside, Warren said “the world is a ‘temporary home’ and that when we leave here, it is not the end of existence”.
She is not the only artist out there, though, bringing some extra Jesus-pizazz to music. Artist like Craig Morgan, Mumford and Sons, and Josh Groban all have sung or reference the Lord in a song or two as well. Even Justin Bieber’s new song Purpose exposes his faith by singing “Ask you to forgive me for my sins, oh would you please?”
Carrie Underwood told Glamour magazine, “Country music is different; you have that Bible Belt-ness about it. I'm not the first person to sing about God, Jesus or faith [or] any of that, and I won't be the last. And it won't be the last for me, either. If you don't like it, change the channel."
Amen to that! Keep singing about the big man upstairs, Carrie.
