To My Best Friends

A letter to Carley Huxley and Justice Matsuoka

To My Best Friends

They say that the best part of high school is the people you meet. I've met two people who have changed my life, and I know they will have a lasting impact after we walk out of the high school doors one last time. They have been there through the highs and lows, and I'm so thankful that they have been apart of me growing up. These two people are also writers in the Odyssey community, so here's a chance to get to know them better.

Carley —

I met Carley about a year ago, but I feel like I have known her my whole life. She is so talented and passionate, and that passion shows with how she treats the people she cares for. She is always there, no matter what, and I'm so thankful for that. She is so intelligent and teaches me something new everyday. Her knowledge goes past the books. She is truly one of the wisest people I have ever met, and my go-to person for advice. Carley's laugh will echo in a room and it's contagious, you can't help but smile when you’re around her. Her sarcastic comments and sense of humor will make your stomach hurt from laughing so hard, which is one of the best feelings in the world. The thing that amazes me the most is the potential she sees in everyone she meets. She will be your biggest cheerleader no matter how far fetched your dream will be. Carley turns everything, from heartbreak to happiness, into art and I hope that she realizes one day the art she is.

Justice —

I suppose the easiest place to start is the beginning of us. Freshman year. I normally have a wall put up, and have hesitation towards everyone who talks to me. I didn't have that with him, and I didn't understand why at the time. I'm so thankful that I was able to grow up with him. He has been my rock throughout high school, and I don't think I would be in the place I am right now if it weren't for him. In Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur, there is a poem that says “I need someone who knows struggle as well as I do. Someone willing to hold my feet in their lap. The type of person who gives exactly why I need before I even know I need it, the type of person who hears me even when I do not speak. It's the type of understanding I demand.” Justice is that person for me, me I am so thankful that I have found that. He is the Alex to my Meredith, and the embodiment of my better half. Everything he does, he puts 101% into. One thing he's passionate about is writing. As Carley turns her experiences into art, Justice turns his into words. He wrote me once saying that soon enough we would both be infinite. I once thought that meant that everything would be perfect, but I've learned that it means that through the hard times, we will have the ability to create our own infinity. I'm so thankful that I was apart of his story, and I can't wait to see the next chapter. We have been through so much, and somehow always manage to come out on top. He's moving away for college in a few months, and I know it'll be hard but it's nothing we can't handle.

In the restaurant I work in, there's a little sign that says something along the lines of “Friends are like stars, the darker it is, the brighter they shine.” I've found that so true with these two. I'm so excited to share my senior year with them and for all of the memories we will make. To close, I want to say to Justice and Carley; I love you both to the moon and back.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Being sick in college is really tough and definitely not a fun experience. Here are the 15 stages that everyone ends up going through when they are sick at college.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
