Saint Croix is part of the United States Virgin Islands, however, it is quieter than Saint Thomas and Saint John. This island that I once was lucky enough to call home, has since been hit with a devastating hurricane. Rebuilding and coming together as a community, Saint Croix is ready to bring in the tourist again. This island is great for a romantic getaway. Saint Croix is often overlooked because it is much quieter than other islands. ‘The Island of misfits,’ welcomes everyone and instantly become part of this island family.
Here are a few of the must sees/do’s while visiting Saint Croix.1. Buck Island, Saint Croix
This island is an uninhabited, National Park where majority of park is under the water. Snorkeling is world-renowned here! I swam with a number of colorful fish, corals, seahorses and huge dolphins when I was here. There are many different boat tours to chose from, I highly suggest Blue Beards, which leaves right from Christiansted as you sail on The Buccaneer.
2. Frederiksted, West End, Saint Croix
I love the west end of Saint Croix, it is easy to walk/bike/drive all around. My favorite place is at Freedom City Surf. This beach side cafe, bar and beach is always open and welcoming to all. The cruise port is in view, but it is never too busy. People are able to rent paddle-boards and take lessons with Pi! This is an amazing experience were you can see straight to the bottom of the ocean while paddling all around the open waters. They have sunset paddles and early morning yoga paddle board classes, so there really is something for everyone to enjoy. There is sidewalk’s all around which makes the walk easier, and with a beautiful view of the ocean. Down the road a bit is Rainbow Beach, where there is always live music, great food and drinks served all day long. This beach is where jet skis and kayaks can be rented for the day! There are many fun cafes with great food around as well, Pier 69 has a fabulous breakfast. Polly’s by the Pier is a cute beach front café with great coffee and tea options. For those who are night owls, the best dive bar in all of Saint Croix is The Lost Dog Pub. The friendly bartenders and great drink specials make for a night you wont forget!
3. Christiansted, Saint Croix
This mid island town is right on the waterfront, full of restaurants, shops and cafes. There are boats and sailboats docked all throughout the little harbor. This is a great place full of local shops. I highly suggest IB designs for very unique hook bracelets with many different designs and meanings. While wondering in town check out Twin City Coffeehouse and Gallery for a great lunch and cup of coffee! Captain Morgan and Cruzan Rum distilleries are around and have great tours and rum tastings! Over time some breweries have become more popular and a great one to visit is Brew STX! While wondering through the middle of the island, I suggest touring the University of the Virgin Islands! It is a beautiful campus and will give you a more local view of the island.
4. North Shore, Saint Croix
I personally love the north shore of the island. This is a great place for beginners scuba diving classes and certifications. Cane Bay dive shop has all the scuba needs and the instructors know the ins and outs of scuba diving. Along side Cane Bay there is also Eats which is a popular tapas restaurant which overlooks the entire beach front. This area is where Mardi-Croix festival is held every year during Mardi Gras! It is such a fun time. Down the road is one of my favorite bars, Off The Cliff, that offers bingo with great prizes, deep dish pizza and drink specials!
There are many great things about the island of Saint Croix. Along with great places to stay! There are batches, houses to rent and hotels. This is a great place to lay out and relax on the beach, enjoy water sports activities and become a foodie with some traditional caribbean dishes.
