When You're A Care-Free Spirit Stuck In A Planner's Mindset

I simply cannot pack a 'cute outfit' without knowing what we are doing.

In life you'll tend to come across two different types of people, the planners and the doers. The planners tend to be type A people who need to schedule their life and time perfectly, and the doers tend to be way more go with the flow. But then there's that certain type of demographic who want to be a super care free, up for anything type of person, but have a nagging feeling in the back of their head that they should really make a plan. I fit in to that third category, so I'm hear to share my struggles with anyone who can relate.

1. Vacations are a struggle.

"Oh we'll figure out what we want to do when we get there!" Ummmmm, no. We should research fun things to do and places to go and where to eat, but also not plan out everyday so we have time to enjoy ourselves.

2. Road trips are an even bigger struggle.

*As they see the road sign pointing towards Boston* "Let's make a pit stop in Boston!" How do you just make a pitstop in a huge city you've never been to before, again we really should have planned this, but ughhh I love cities we should definitely go!

3. Packing makes me go nuts.

I can ask ten different people what clothes I should bring for a trip based on the activities we have planned, but then we get to our destination and I only end up using 1/4th of the clothes and needing stuff I left behind because we decided to be spontaneous.

4. Big group plans stress me out.

Have you ever tried to take a family of twenty into an Applebees and eat remotely near each other or at the same time? Well let me tell ya, it's not easy. But there's always those people that are like don't worry it won't take too long to get a table, meanwhile 90 minutes later half of us have our drinks while the others are still shoved in the waiting area.

5. Picture taking is an ordeal.

Group pictures are fun and cute ways of capturing memories but you cannot just take one and hope it turned out good. I literally would have wasted SO much film if I was alive in the 80's, I don't know how they did it. Multiple pictures, from different distances, and different angles, that is the only way to ensure that at least one good picture will make the cut.

6. Grocery lists are a godsend.

If I ever walked in to a grocery store needing to get food for the week without a list, I would mentally combust. Sure there are some people that think they can remember they are out of peanut butter but then they get to the shelf and pass it thinking that they always have that on hand. Lists people. Lists.

7. Having people over for dinner isn't a stress free scenario.

If I were to have a dinner party, or even family over for dinner, I would want to run the menu and times by my guests to make sure that it would work for them. But people that just assume or say come over around 7 for dinner next Friday, make me nervous.

8. Forget about holiday dinners working out flawlessly.

If you do not coordinate between family members way in advance you will end up with two huge things of mashed potatoes. Now while that doesn't sound horrible at first, just know that one of those people were supposed to bring the pie. What's a holiday dinner without pie?!

9. There is a method to gift giving.

Just winging it on guessing what someone would like for their Birthday or Christmas is absurd to me. It's literally wasting your money. Just ask them.

10. Important dates need to be remembered.

If I forgot my sister or best friend's birthday I would die. I would be so embarrassed that I forgot that I really may actually die. But some people just rely on Facebook or someone else to mention that someone's birthday is around the corner, I cannot those important dates need to be written down and in my face so that I can do things like plan to get a great gift.

11. Parties can't just be thrown together.

Sure parties don't require too much to make them happen, but I could literally never feel prepared if I bought everything I needed the day of. Even if I didn't forget something, I would spend the night assuming I had, and in the end it would have been coasters-which no one needs or uses so we're all good.

Yes, these are all situations that can/do/have happened to me, if you're also stuck in this in between land with me, hi!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
