Whether you’re a full-time student or have already entered the workforce, there is no doubt that we all want to excel in life and will do whatever it takes to get where we want to be. Many people continue their education in hopes to secure a better job, while others work for years to climb the ladder within their company. Some people do both simultaneously.

As the work tasks and/or school assignments begin to pile up, you inevitably also have other issues you have to deal with in your personal life. This could include family issues, social issues, and other things that are beyond your control.

During this time, it becomes easy to neglect ourselves as we become busy and overwhelmed. This is why it’s important to find time to simply take care of yourself.

The various issues we have to deal with in our lives can be physically draining and mentally exhausting. Here are a few simple ways that you can practice self-care.

1. Pamper session

Run a nice hot bath (yes you can throw the bath bomb in), light a candle and let your worries melt away. Manicures and pedicures are also relaxing. It’s the simple things!

2. Do something for the first time

It’s always good to step out of your comfort zone. Try something for the first time and you may discover you really enjoy something that you have been missing out/passing up on. You could also try something you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

3. Turn your phone off

I know this can be difficult if you’re someone who is constantly on their phone. However, taking a day or even just a few hours away from your phone won’t kill you.

Take that break away from social media, take a break from the gossip in the group chat and just detach yourself from the world for a bit.

4. Exercise

In addition to the physical health benefits of exercise, the feeling of accomplishment after a workout is undeniable. Exercising also helps reduce our stress levels and gives us a better sense of well-being and ultimately gives us the energy we need to deal with everyday battles.

5. Binge watch your favorite series.

Sometimes staying in on the weekend and binge-watching something on Netflix is the way to go. We often feel like we need to be doing something and staying productive but that can be draining.

We need days where we do nothing and enjoy some alone time with our favorite movie or series.

6. Declutter session

This may sound more like a chore to some. However, there’s always a feeling of relief after we take the time clean, get rid of things we don’t need, and reorganize. Life can be a mess as it is. Your home/room doesn’t need to be as well.

I know it can be easy to get caught up in the many demands that life is asking of you. It’s okay to work hard and strive to be all that you can, just remember that neglecting yourself during the process only diminishes your journey of getting there. Take care of yourself.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
