A huge marvel fan-base has erupted with the huge movie empire that marvel has created over the last few years. This has lead more people going back to comics, and Marvel comics had a huge backlash as of late. With a new fan-base, there are also new voices that are speaking out about the latest Captain America comic by Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz.
At the end of the first issue of their Captain America series, they revealed that Steve Rogers is a Hydra Agent. If you are not familiar with Captain America or Marvel's Hydra story arc, let's say it's like finding out that Captain America is a Nazi.
Captain America, otherwise known as Captain Steve Rogers was created during the second world war. Many have noted that this character is exactly like the 'perfect race' that Hitler is so infamous of trying to achieve. This was done purposefully by Steve Rogers's creator. They were two Jewish men who wished not only to inspire the American public but comment on the war. Steve Rogers is a symbol of hope that still lives on today. So when Steve Rogers is revealed to be a part of Hydra, an organization that not only worked with the Nazis and on several occasions disregarded human life in many forms. It is understandable that many fans feel that not only is this not true to character but butchers Steve Roger's creators, past, and symbol; that are important to many people.
What was even more shocking was the fact Nick Spencer went on record with EW news to say, "Issue 2 will lay a lot of our cards on the table in terms of what the new status quo is, but the one thing we can say unequivocally is: This is not a clone, not an impostor, not mind control, not someone else acting through Steve. This really is Steve Rogers, Captain America himself". It sounded like he was explaining that the Captain America we know and love was not going to be saved by a twist in the plot. That he wished to play the story line as Steve Rogers being Hydra. They had fans mass tweeting with #capisnothydra. It was a huge sensation, with people explaining the history and their love for Captain America as well as their outrage on the creator's choice to make Captain America Hydra.
While it was shocking one of Marvel's creator, Stan Lee came to the writers' defense, saying that while the idea was crazy it was interesting and would get people to read! This was true! When the second issue was published it seemed that Spencer had lied. Captain America has been revealed to have memories of joining Hydra because they were placed by Hydra. Spencer claims did not lie technically, claiming he never said it was not implanted memories. There is some speculation that this was the backup issue if the fans did, in fact, take the news too hard for the comic to sell. I guess we will never truly know!
