Marvel has released the trailer for "Captain Marvel" on September 18 and everyone is hyped for it. The excitement shows considering the fact that the trailer has globally accumulated 109 million views only after 24 hours of release which is absolutely amazing. "Captain Marvel" will be Marvel's first female-led MCU title movie and first movie co-directed by a woman, which means so much to women everywhere.
Women are no longer just the sidekick or love interest. They can now see themselves as the main hero who can save the day. This representation empowers little girls to fight for what they believe in. Such representation like this makes me so hopeful for future generations. Growing up, there were not a lot of strong female leads that I could look up to. If there were any leads, they were always the love interest or a clueless girl waiting for a man to solve her problems.
This type of representation shows girls that it's okay to take the back seat and let the males solve everything. Movies today show young girls that mentality is completely incorrect. Girls run the show and shouldn't have to take the back seat, but instead, they should be taking the wheel. I can immediately see the effects of women representation with my little sister. Her can-do mentality is something I wish I had at her age. With what I see with my little sister, the future is truly female.
Representation in mainstream media is important since it shows minorities how others view them and how they view themselves. Marvel has continuously been representing people of color and women in powerful roles that Hollywood has never seen before. The diversity Black Panther portrayed serves as a monumental stepping stone for people of color. The same sentiment is shared with the release of "Captain Marvel."
The movie, starring Brie Larson, is set to be released on March 8, 2019, which is also National Women's Day.
