Wow. I didn't know what to expect with this new movie, mainly because I had next to no knowledge of who Captain Marvel even was before this film, but also because this was the MCU's first movie with a female hero as the lead.
I was hoping they would not make her being a woman a huge deal in the film, and just focus on her being a hero, and they exceeded my expectations.
They didn't make Carol a character who was trying to overcome the oppression of everyone around her. If anything, only the main antagonist was condescending to her, but they never clearly stated that it was because she was a woman.
This was a trait of the movie that I really admired because instead, they focused on her journey as a hero, which had next to nothing to do with her gender.
However, the female empowerment in this film was badass. Carol never needed a man to fight with her, and she didn't even need a man to help her grow, she did that all on her own and with the help of her female friends.
Anyway, despite the female empowerment, this film was really incredible. I was really intrigued by the way that they chose to go through Carol's memories of her past life and how she became who she is.
Especially being someone who knew nothing about Carol's origin story, I was really impressed with how the film told it.
They made it interesting while also making it easy to understand, and I really liked how the audience learned some of the things about Carol and her past at the same time that she did in the film.
Also, Nick Fury's relationship with Carol in this film is iconic. It's the usual Nick Fury charm, plus the sassy and confident personality of Carol. That mixture made their growing friendship one of my favorite aspects of the movie.
This was also just an amazing aspect because we got to see some of Nick Fury's past, something we haven't really seen anything of over the past ten years of the MCU films.
This film also took advantage of the time period it was placed. They did such a great job at establishing that it was taking place in the '90s, with older stores like Blockbuster and Radio Shack, and including the technology and clothing that was prevalent in the '90s. This was a good way to establish the year without directly stating it.
Also, since this film is in the past this gave the writers the opportunity to not only explore the beginning of Fury and Coulson's relationship but to explore the beginning of them realizing that alien life does exist and how they deal with it.
Also, since this film is in the past we are able to find out why Fury has his eye patch, and I promise, it's a story worth knowing. We also get to see the origin story of not only Carol's superhero name but also a certain huge name that plays a part in all of the MCU films, which I actually really loved how they came up with it.
I know that's vague, but I can't say much about it without giving it away, but when you see it, you'll know.
They also used the opportunity of the film taking place in the past to include some familiar faces and objects from past MCU films.
One of these objects was kind of confusing as to why it had a place in the film, it seemed to contradict past films, but maybe we will get an explanation as to how it got to be where it is. However, these easter eggs were still shocking to see on screen again and I like that they included them.
Another positive about this movie is that they did a really good job at growing Carol's character throughout the film and having her learn about herself and her own power and strength through discovering who she is and how she became who she is.
My only negative thought on her development would be that I wanted a little more of her past, but that's mainly because I'm just curious. The main aspect is obviously to develop who Carol is in the present, not the past, I just always love learning more about the backgrounds of characters.
Overall, this movie exceeded my expectations. It was funny and intriguing, and it made me love Carol Danvers and Nick Fury (even more than before) and it just made me want to see more of them. The action scenes were good, and the storyline, in general, kept me interested the whole time, which is sometimes more difficult to do with origin stories since they aren't directly affecting the present storyline. But this film was an origin story told well.
I encourage everyone to go out and see this movie, especially if you're a Marvel fan or just love women superheroes in general. Even though it's not in the present timeline of the MCU, it explains why Nick Fury even paged her in the first place at the end of Infinity War and made me look forward to whether or not she will have another interaction with him in the future.
Also, WATCH THE END CREDIT SCENE. I promise it's worth it. It's everything I wanted it to be. And there's a Stan Lee dedication done in an amazing way, considering this is the first MCU film since his passing.
Go see this film! It made me so much more excited for Avengers: Endgame. April can't come fast enough.
