I have always been somehow a supporter of capital punishment. Although, from time to time, I am doubtful about whether I should reconsider.
These people on death row are in the vast majority serial killers, cold-minded people that do not care in the least minimum about taking a life. They carry out their crimes consciously, knowing that they are causing serious harm to their victims and a permanent pain to families. They are not compassionate and act out of pure evil. Why, then, should we even consider sparing their lives? It does not make much sense to me. Some people like Ted Bundy and Albert Fish even deserved to suffer because of the pain they inflicted on both their victims and their respective families.
However, is it not ironic to support the very thing we are against in the first place? We are killing people because they, too, killed people. That has made me think that perhaps, taking a life of a life is not the right thing to do. The truth is, the execution of a killer will not bring his victims back. It is unfortunate, but there is nothing that we can do about it. Life is life and, once it’s gone, there is no way to bring it back.
Although sometimes I am conflicted by these previous thoughts, I end up firmly encouraging capital punishment. Why? I think of the victim. I visualize everything they went through, yet, I know there is far more than I can imagine, and that is when it gets to me. The victimized: they were people, innocent, in the wrong place at the wrong time. They had lives they wanted to live, dreams wanted to accomplish, and experiences they wanted to turn into memories. Nobody in this world has the right to deprive a person of that. They did not deserve the pain, the anguish, or the torture. Nor did their relatives. These killers coldly decided the fate of many while using unmeasurable cruelty in the process. It could have been me or someone I love. I rethink and yes, I would honestly want them to receive a death sentence. I shall even like them to suffer. I am conscious of the irony of executions, as I am equally aware of the absolute “lack of civilization” it implies. But, hey! Life is not fair because if it were, innocent people would not have died in the first place and murderers would not exist at all.
However, I am not completely sure of what method of execution is the right one. I assume it has to depend mostly on the details of the crime. I want to believe that the deaths should be carried out in a painless way. I do, would like to be 100% convinced that the deprivation of life is more than enough punishment already.
Thereby, I have no other choice than to lean towards Hypoxia, which is a potential new method of execution that is said to be completely painless.
I agree that these murderers do not deserve the opportunity of living. I do not desire to acquire somehow the mind of a criminal. I cannot support suffering because it is inhumane and deviant, and most importantly, I would be turning into what I am killing. Let us do only Hypoxia, then let a different, far more powerful kind of justice take care of the rest.
