The town of Orleans is one of Cape Cod's hidden gems. While small, it is a very welcoming and quaint town with a lot more to offer than what meets the eye. While I have lived on Cape my entire life, I often forget about this place just because it simply is not a town that just comes to mind like others do, so I am so excited to shed some light on this town.
The Pilgrims first settled Orleans in 1693 because they were unsatisfied with the soil the land provided elsewhere. Originally Orleans was part of Eastham until they left, and became their own town in 1797. Orleans is named after Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans. This was done to recognize France's aid during the American Revolution, and because after being captured by England twice during the war, the town refused an English name.
Orleans' early economy was driven by agriculture, fishing and whaling. When fishing in the town really took off, many salt mills started popping up around town to help keep captures healthy until they were needed for food.
At one point, the town had very little lumber to work with due to the growing population and more fishermen being drawn to the area. This lumber shortage didn't end until the 19th century when a railroad was built.
Orleans is, interestingly enough, the first and only Untied States territory to receive fire from the enemy during World War I. This happened on the morning of July 21, 1918 when a German submarine U-156 came up about three miles off of the shore. This submarine began to shoot at a nearby tugboat. A few of these shells happened to land on Nauset beach, which is in Orleans.
Now we will get on with the fun section:
