In case you haven’t heard, the internet just exploded. Recent events in the world of pop culture have created a huge feud amongst celebrities and people are taking sides. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, let me break it down for you.
1. Calvin Harris’ song “This is What You Came For” becomes wildly popular and Taylor Swift claims that she wrote the lyrics for the song.
2. Calvin responds with tweets confirming the news, but also tells Taylor that there is no need to try and drag someone through the mud.
3. People begin to go crazy on social media by commenting snake emojis all over Taylor’s pictures.
4. Other celebrities get in on the drama by subtly (and not so subtly) subtweeting about Taylor’s actions.
5. Kim Kardashian tweets this snarky comment, and proceeds to release a video of a phone call between Kanye and Taylor Swift where she approves of the lyric “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex.”
6. Taylor and her reps put out a statement saying that Taylor never approved of the next lyric in which Kanye says “Why? I made that bitch famous.”
The internet breaks into a huge feud.
So that’s the low down.
Now, I want to make it clear that typically, I could not care less about the happenings of pop culture drama. And furthermore, I could not give two shits about the Kardashian klan. However, in light of the recent events, I’ve chosen to take a rather unusual position and join Team Kim & Kanye. But before anyone gets pissed off at me for this, let me explain my reasoning for being anti-Swift.
I won’t deny that Taylor Swift has some catchy lyrics and relatable songs, but the majority of her fame has come from the direct capitalization on the actions of other people, and making sure that she has remained in the good graces of the public eye. Let me break it down for you in simpler terms. Taylor has claimed time and time again that her music comes from the heart and is based on real experiences and emotions. The majority of these experiences that she chooses to write about are break-ups. Which means, she is directly using the actions of others to create music from which she profits.
And I have no problem with this. If an artist wants to write music about real-life experiences and other people, I don’t mind that at all as it typically will make the music more relatable. However, my issue with Taylor Swift is her hypocrisy.
Her entire stardom has been based on singing about ex-boyfriends that did her wrong, yet when Kanye West wants to write a single line about her, that’s a problem? I understand that he called her “that b*tch,” but let us not forget that in 2008 she wrote a line about Camilla Belle saying, “she’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress.” Tell me again how it’s okay for her to play the victim when she was doing the exact same thing as Kanye just a few years back.
Secondly, I can’t support Taylor Swift any longer as she continues to turn into a serial dater. At first it seemed as though she just had terrible luck with boys (again, playing the victim card). However, as I’ve watched her popularity grow, it’s become almost as though she needs to be dating someone to benefit her career. With a boyfriend, she can write love songs. Without a boyfriend, she can write a platinum album. Either way, it seems as though her career is dependent upon having someone new to write about, and for me, that’s just not what relationships are supposed to be about.
Out of all of this mayhem that broke the internet, we’ve learned a major lesson. If you want to play the victim, make sure you were actually a victim and not just being hypocritical. At the end of the day, at least we got some entertainment, and most likely, a future Taylor Swift album.
