“So what are your plans after college?”
One of the most avoided questions in a college students career. I mean, really? I was 19 about a year ago, still living with my mom, getting in trouble for staying out late, a teenager. Now that I am almost 21 everyone expects me to have some well thought out plan of what I want to do. I personally think it’s a complete joke because even if I did have some elusive plan of what I wanted to do with my life; I would consider the possibility of life changes.
I think it’s fair to say that at least 1/10 people I personally know follow the same dreams they had while in college and the number might be even smaller than that. When it comes to older adults and family members I give the, your typical scripted response that usually ends with a nod of approval and some corny inspirational saying. However, when I’m speaking to other students and young adults I always ask “ do you want the truth or do you want to hear my award winning script?” that usually ends with a chuckle and a sense of relief that I too, similar to them, haven’t figured a damn thing out. The truth is…. I HAVE NO CLUE. I mean, well, I have somewhat of a plan for my life. But there are many gaps that I take into consideration.
I know I want to be an entrepreneur, just like most millennials, but I don’t know what I want to do as my day job. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have rich parents or grandparents that will invest in my ideas, so I would have to turn to investors and my own money. I know this isn’t an easy task and I have become content with the fact that I may have to work for somebody for a few years if I can't find an investor to help me make my dreams come true. I am a very logical thinker and I always have to be prepared, but it’s so difficult for me to find a career that I would want to do for the rest of my life.
But, that doesn’t mean I don’t want a master plan. Some things just take time! Don’t freak out, like I’ve done a million times, just breathe and know that things will work out. Dedicate time to what you love and I’m sure there will be results, small or big. Every day I try to work on my dreams and hope for the best. So far, I’ve been able to narrow down my choices and get more of a direction. So listen, just remember if you don’t have a plan for after college, just know you’re not alone.
