5 Tips That Help Me Conquer The Struggle That Is Falling Asleep

In This Article:

Even though it's rare, sometimes I will manage to get myself in bed by 10 p.m. This sounds great, right?

But then there are nights for no apparent reason that I won't be able to fall asleep until 2 or 3 a.m.

Despite me trying to be a responsible human for once by trying to get to bed early, my mind takes a quick turn and says, "Just kidding!"

It's a real struggle, let me tell you.

It just sucks and whenever I have these sleepless nights, it negatively affects me the next day.

Going to bed at a reasonable time is challenging, but sometimes actually falling asleep is even more difficult. However, I have managed to find a few tips that help me fall asleep more easily.

Listen To A Podcast.

This is going to sound a bit odd, but sometimes listening to podcasts help me fall asleep.

Yes, it is a struggle getting your headphones or earbuds situated just the right way and more often than not, I wake up tangled in the cord, but listening to a podcast helps put my mind to sleep.

Before I fall asleep, my mind has the tendency to wander and think about anything from stuff happening in my life to the wording of a sentence I previously wrote, so having something to focus on keeps my mind in one place and, eventually, allows it to fall asleep.

I listen to a variety of podcasts in my day to day life, but when it comes to putting me to sleep, I listen to any Planet Money episode from NPR. I had to listen to a couple of episodes for one of my classes back in high school and since then, I have been hooked.

Don't Take A Shower Right Before You Sleep

I love to shower at night and I know this contradicts the tip I just gave, but hear me out.

Just because you shower at night doesn't mean you have to shower right before you sleep.

Taking a shower typically wakes me up, which is not practical if you are trying to sleep.

So, I try to take a shower one to two hours before I go to sleep. This way, I won't have the shower's effect of waking me up negatively impact me while I'm trying to fall asleep.

Try To Go To Bed At The Same Time Every Night

When your sleep cycle is disrupted, your body could have trouble falling asleep when you want it to.

To combat this, I try to go to bed at the same time every night.

There will obviously be nights when you can't keep to your typical bedtime routine, but try to keep it consistent to the best of your ability. Your body will thank you.

Drink Water Before Going To Sleep

I don't really know why this works, but for some reason, drinking a bottle of water before getting in bed helps me fall asleep.

If you're prone to muscle cramps or anything of the sort, drinking water before bed will allow you to stay hydrated and stay asleep so you aren't woken up by those terrible charley horses.

Make Yourself Do Some Work

If you're not going to sleep, you might as well try to be productive and get some stuff done.

It's funny because either you'll get tired from working, or you'll make yourself fall asleep to avoid doing any more.

Just try reading a chapter from your textbook.

Works every time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
