This traditional white, orange and yellow candy is quite a popular choice around Halloween but do you really know much about it?
Candy corn was invented in the 1880s by George Renninger at the Wunerle Candy Company in Pennsylvania. While Wunerle was the original home for candy corn, and the first ones to sell the product, another would have much more success with the candy. Goelitz Confectionary Company starting making this candy in 1898. They originally called this treat "chicken feed" and the slogan was " something worth crowing for". The reason for the name chicken feed is because corn was commonly given to chicken. The candy was so popular that the selling of candy corn helped their candy company survive the great depression, world war one and world war two. In the 1900s the demand for this candy was so high that the company had to turn down orders because they didn't have the production capacity to keep up with the candy's popularity. In 1951 the Goelitz company had 12 factories around the county making candy corn. This company is still around today but you probably know about it under a different name. Goelitz became Jelly Belly in 2001. Today, about 20 million pounds of candy corn are sold each year.
