The past 5 years have not been very kind to the San Francisco 49ers. Ever since their loss to The Ravens in the 2013 Super Bowl; San Francisco has been unable to retain their powerhouse defense. That defense used to be scary, lead by Patrick WIllis and NaVarro Bowman. In 2011, 2012, and 2013 respectfully, the team went 13-3, 11-4-1, and 12-4. Those three years should be the motivation for the team to get better than how they used to be.
San Francisco went into this years offseason with one of the highest cap spaces in the NFL, and they have signed some key free agents already. On March 11th elite cornerback Richard Sherman signed with San Francisco on a 3 year deal. Also, on March 14th, San Francisco signed athletic running back Jerick Mckinnon. Mckinnon gives San Francisco the ability to develop a rookie running back behind a craft veteran. Nonetheless, the impact of a healthy Richard Sherman can be huge. This is possibly the start to a new hard nosed 49ers team.
Along with free agent signings, the 49ers have a plethora of draft picks, nine to be exact. A lot of them in the early rounds. They own the 9th pick in the first round, the 27th pick in the second round, two third round picks, and picks in every round including two seventh round picks. I am very excited to see who the 49ers draft in the first round. Will they go defense in an attempt to bring back their old style of play? Or will they select a dominant target for their new franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to throw to? Either way, I believe they are going in the right direction. This is a franchise that knows how to rebuild fast.
