ALBANY - 15 months and counting after the death of Dontay Ivy, an Albany man tased to death just feet from his own home by local police, his family and community are still tragically affected and still await justice. In a statement from Ivy's family and the Upstate New York chapter of Black Lives Matter, some of these effects are discussed. The statement appears on the YouCaring fundraiser page for the family:
"To compound matters, with the loss of Dontay's income to the household, Dontay's family lost their home... Your generosity thus far has been vital to the family, and has not gone unnoticed. It is with this in mind that once more we are asking concerned individuals and community members to help assist Dontay's four nieces and nephews with their academic expenses for the 2016-17 school year. We have already verified that Dontay's son's expenses have been met for the coming term.
Our goal is to raise $400, per child, to cover clothing, backpacks, shoes, school supplies, hygiene products and other necessities. Every dollar raised will go directly to the children's guardian to allocate accordingly. No amount is insignificant. Whether you contribute $5 or $50, it will all help greatly."
Organizer Masai Andrews posted this update to Facebook on July 17:
In addition to volunteering in the community and donating any amount of financial support to families, sharing the stories and names of victims of fatal police encounters can exponentially increase support.
Additional funds for the loved ones of recent victims can be found at the links below. Increasing their visibility by sharing on social media can make a dramatic difference and help reach the goals set to meet their different needs.
