For those of us who have had that unforgettable camp experience, it is clear to us that camp is the most wonderful place on earth. There is such an intense joyous feeling one has when doing anything at camp, whether it be singing, dancing, or kayaking, camp creates such a magical environment for kids.
The atmosphere that camp becomes after a few short weeks is a home away from a home, a safe place for kids. For currently being a camp counselor at the camp I used to attend, I have to admit that the preparation that goes into camp is beyond what I had imagined. There are many unforeseen responsibilities, and with responsibility comes room for error.
Unfortunately, a camp near me had a fatal accident that left national campers, staff members, and families in shock. The community of summer camps is currently feeling pain and sorrow for the camper who was lost. We are also double checking for safety, to make sure that kids make it home.
I hope that this accident does not destroy the nation's belief in summer camp. The growth that the kids experience, the knowledge that they acquire, and the friends that they make are priceless. This is my plea to continue sending kids to summer camp, so they can feel the magic.
