Why Being A Camp Counselor Is Beneficial In More Ways Than One

Most college kids talk about summer vacation as a care free, relaxed time where they hang out with their old friends or go traveling to new places they've never been to before. For me my summer vacation is spent with kids, aged 5 to 6 from 8 am until 5 pm. Most people think that being a Camp Counselor, means giving up all your free time and wasting them on kids, but the time I've spent at camp have turned out to be some of the best times that I will never forget.

Being in charge of kids is a huge responsibility and has showed me the true meaning of leadership. Whether it's making a head count to make sure every kid is in line to making sure they eat their food during lunch, I've learned to be aware of the kids and most of all their actions and safety. It's almost a preview of parenting, since I have to be mindful and attentive of the kids that I am in charge of because it's key for them to always have fun while I maintain order and discipline. What people don't know about camp, is that these few weeks of camp are going to stay with the kids forever. Little activities such as Arts and Crafts or Sports help the kids become more open to trying new things and Camp Counselor always have to encourage the kids to do so, because optimistic, positive energy is what they need. Being a good leader or role model, I try to apply the lessons I've learned and implement them in the kids that are in my group. There's no better feeling than seeing a camper, learn something from you as a lesson that they will keep with them for the rest of their life. During the short period that you get to know your campers, you become the single most influential person in their lives.

Camp Staff is also a perk of Working as a Counselor. The people you work with have to engage in the activities with the kids. For example at my camp we have games that the kids, do but then the counselors perform the same game again competing against each other. Staff become like family and the awesome people that you meet when working are friendships that you will keep with you. You already have so much in common with co-counselors since you both gave up your summer to spend time with kids, impacting their kids in a positive way.

Waking up at 7 in the morning is less of a struggle when you realize that your job is not only benefitting the camper but yourself as well, in more way than one. It's the best job ever.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
