Think of social media as fast food. It doesn't have the nutrition of real life, nor does it nourish us. It may not lead to weight gain, but it does shrink our attention spans and feed into the procrastination epidemic. And just like weight gain, social media can prevent us from really living. We feed off new notifications. We click on apps, often unintentionally, and devour hours of our day without realizing.
Imagine counting how many times you go on social media a day. When you’re in the line at Starbucks, when you Snapchat on your way to class or sit down to lunch with other girls that share your addiction. Consider your favorite social media the same way you think about Taco Bell in the lead-up to spring break. Unhealthy social media habits can be just as detrimental to our goals. Whether it's a career or your studies, it's hard to be productive when you're checking social media every 10 minutes.
It seems like our generation always has a screen in front of us. When we’re on a hike, we’re taking a picture, and when we’re in the gym, we’re changing the music in our ears. Often, most of the knowledge we obtain comes from listicles on our newsfeeds. And it’s only a matter of time before reading words on paper becomes a foreign concept.
When will we consider social media a real addiction? It’s consuming our lives isn’t it? Just some food for thought.
