So, you've graduated high school, one of the biggest things yet to happen in your life, and now you pack up your life and move to a less than home-y dormitory with random students your age so you might gain a higher education to start your career. What a strange but culturally normal transition into your adult life! Know it or not, you are about to fall headfirst into a very different stage of your life. Here are a few tips for a successful college experience!
1. Don't stay cooped up in your dorm room.
I know that it can be extremely hard to get out of the comfort of your quiet dorm room, but make an effort to make friends with people in your hall and who knows, maybe you might meet your new best friend! Believe it or not, many freshmen are in the exact same boat you are in. They're feeling nervous, anxious, or scared, just like you.
2. Get involved!
I cannot stress this one enough. This is a great way to make friends and boost your resume! Plus, joining on-campus clubs is super fun. Depending on your college, you could join social clubs, academic clubs, glee clubs, or play on an intramural sports team. Whatever you're interested in or even curious about, check it out! You never know, you could find something new that you really love!
3. Go to class.
I know that there is a strong temptation to skip class, especially when it's an 8 a.m. class and there is an even stronger temptation when your professors don't care about your attendance. Now that you're a college student, you're the only one responsible for your actions. There are no parents forcing you to go to class. But if you want to get your money's worth and if you actually came to college for an education, then you should attend your class whether or not you feel like it. Trust me, your grade will thank me later.
4. Get plugged in to a local church.
If you are moving to a different town, then it is imperative that you find a local church to become a part of. Being apart of church body is so important for your spiritual life and to make sure you are being kept accountable by fellow believers. It is also good for you to be serving and investing in the community in which you are living to be the hands and feet of Jesus right where you are!
5. Work hard, but don't forget to have a good time!
College is hard work and is now your full-time job, so treat it as such. But do not get so caught up in getting perfect grades or stress about your GPA so much you don't have time for fellowship and friends. This is probably the hardest thing for all freshmen to learn. We all need a healthy balance of hard work and leisure time.
College is one of the best times of your life. It is full of growth, newfound friendships that last forever and many fond memories. Take it one day at a time and enjoy the crazy ride.
