Lat week, Infinity Ward—developers of "Call of Duty," "Call of Duty 2," the wildly popular "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" and "Call of Duty: Ghosts"—released a trailer for their next project on the official "Call of Duty" YouTube page. The next installation in the series will be called "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare." For fans of the series, there are a few things in the trailer that are worth a closer look. Some things in this article have been announced by the developers themselves in an interview.
You are not a recruit. In many of the "call of Duty" games, players start out as the new guy on the field. Though this is an obvious go-to move, putting players through a basic training simulator, it's been done enough times in the series that most players are ready for button prompts. In an interview with PlayStation, Taylor Kurosaki of Infinity Ward spoke on the game's protagonist, "what we tried to do that's a little bit different is, again we talked about the theme of leadership. Lt. [Nick] Reyes is a squad commander. He is a tier one special operations operative who has a squad of operatives under his wing. They are pilots, they are commandos kind of all-in-one. And he goes, throughout the events of our story, he goes from being this squad leader to being a ship's commander."
Robots? It might be that a mech suit like the one from "Advanced Warfare" is in the game. But some frames in the trailer show very clearly that there will be robots in "Infinite Warfare." Whether it's the former, the latter, or both, players will definitely have to fight against at least one robot as a very short section of the trailer showed it grabbing and attacking the player.
Grapple shots, making their first appearance in "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare," are back for this installment. The difference, however, seems to be in the perniciousness of it. in multiplayer, it could be used as a one-shot-kill attack. In the trailer for "Infinite Warfare," the grapple shot can be seen pulling an enemy closer before a lethal melee attack is used to finish them off.
Another cool weapon Jacob Minkoff of Infinity Ward touched on in an interview was the Seeker Grenade. According to him this Seeker Grenade, "is this like spider bot that runs out and [chases] down enemies." It is a cool sounding weapon, but whether or not it feels like it belongs in the "Call of Duty" series is yet to be seen.
With the new "Call of Duty," Infinity Ward will be introducing a seamless game play experience. According Minkoff, players will be able to be engaged in a firefight, call their personal Jackal space craft, take off into space, engage in a dogfight (yes, flying a ship is going to be a thing, too!), dock on the flight deck of the Retribution mother ship, walk to the control room and select the next mission they want to complete without a single loading screen.
This will also integrate the new zero G mechanic. Gunfights will utilize both the standard "boots on the ground" gunfights we know from previous titles and zero gravity gunfights as well. Reyes will have the ability to exit his Jackal while in space, have a gunfight on the hull of an enemy ship, breach the ship and transition to a standard gunfight while inside. So theoretically, a player could see quite a bit of zero G combat.
There is a ton more to uncover in the trailer and interviews if this is a game you're excited about. I just picked out the bits that are more interesting. With E3 around the corner, we can expect a steady stream of information for us to wet our collective whistle with. But, until we get word on a beta, the videos will have to quench our thirst for the next "Call of Duty."
