There isn't enough time in the day. Our generation has been fine-tuned to take on everything, we multitask and try to accomplish the impossible. But there just isn't enough time.
I'm guilty of having the inability to say no. I have the constant need to be a part of everything (because FOMO). So I resort to committing myself to way too many things and end up not having time to accomplish it all. At least not in the way that I want to.
So to all those with this tendency, I'm going to be a hypocrite and say: stop.
We want to do it all. We want to perform well academically, hold a job (or more), be a part of extracurriculars, have a social life, stay in touch with the family, workout, be tan...who knows maybe sleep? Eat? We want to be able to do it all. But we just can't.
There isn't enough time in the day, and as much as I wish it could, that's never going to change. So we need to stop trying to take on the world when there simply isn't time.
There is no doubt that I spread myself too thin. And that stems from the fact that I just don't want to miss out. But I've begun to realize you miss out when you do everything.
You miss out on the little things, the moments that you're too busy to be a part of. You miss out on being able to just take a second and chill. You miss out on the inside jokes, the good meals, the sleep. And it's hard to give it your all when you're so burnt out and short on time. You have to prioritize, because when the things at the top of your list begin to suffer (and trust me they do)...is it really worth it?
And that's what you have to ask yourself the next time you're about to take on yet something else. If you won't be able to perform your best and put your all into that plus the other things you have going on, then just simply don't. In addition, your health may suffer as well. What without sleep and the constant strain of stress, it's incredibly easy to become sick. Stress actually makes you sick due to the high cortisone levels that weaken your immune system. And there's enough germs on a college campus to go around, we don't need to be voluntarily making ourselves sick.
It's about quality, not quantity. And in college it's easy to get wrapped up in everything and try to do it all in an effort to cram everything into four years. But when you're able to put your all into those certain things that are important to you, you get so much more out of it.
I know this makes me a hypocrite, because there's no doubt that I'm guilty of it (my roommates can attest to that). But that's why you can take it from me, college will be a much more fulfilling and enriching experience when you put value in the things that you take part in.
So to all those who are like me and try to do any and everything: stop. Let yourself trim down and say no to some things. Let yourself soak up the four (or more) years we have here and enjoy it. Let there be time in the day.
