It seems that every time I come home from a trip into the woods, I seem to remember why I like it there in the first place.
The unexpected loss of cell phone coverage 20 miles out before you even hit Eminence, Missouri might be considered a negative to some, that some including me. However, after days of not being able to be connected to my beloved social media or group of friends, you get used to the silence. The silence becomes a warm blanket that wraps around everything. The only thing for miles is the sound of country dogs barking, birds, insects and maybe the passing sound of a jet boat nearby on the Current River.
Of course there's the obvious perks: roasted marshmallows and fires. Having gooey marshmallow in between your fingers and finding that it somehow made its way to your hair. Or the smoke of the fire keeping bugs away for the moment.
You can't forget the river floats, the reason you're there in the first place. No matter if you prefer tubes, kayaks, canoes or rafts. Stuff your coolers full of Gatorade, beef jerky, Snickers and beer. Don't forget the sunscreen and hope to God when you get done your buddies don't call you a lobster. What luck you have if you're able to do your seven mile float without anyone else to share the river with.
Whatever your favorite part might be, there's something to be said for losing yourself in the woods for a few days.
