Camilla Cabello, the former member of Fifth Harmony, had a pretty successful trip to the VMAs this year. She was nominated for five different categories, winning two. She not only won Artist of the Year but also Video of the Year. I listen to her music on the radio and sometimes on my Spotify account, and she's definitely become very successful and popular. But as I compare her to the other artists and videos nominated, I disagree with the results.
For the Artist of the Year Award, she was competing with Post Malone, Bruno Mars, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, and Drake. Personally, I only know two songs Camila released in the past year, "Havana" and "Never Be The Same," and I couldn't name many other songs she's released.
I think the other artists have been much more notable in the past year. Cardi B took the music industry by storm, as we can tell by her well-deserved New Artist Award. She's constantly been on the Top 100, released an album this year, and has been featured on multiple artists' tracks. Post Malone's new album "Beerbongs and Bentleys" has been extremely popular; I listen to his music and so do many of my friends and even older neighbors.
Ariana Grande just released a new album, titled "Sweetener," that's been much awaited by her fans. Her releases of "No Tears Left to Cry" and "God is a Woman" were huge hits. Drake was very successful this year with his new album "Scorpion," and Bruno Mars completely took over all the pop radio stations with his song "Finesse" featuring Cardi B. Camila definitely was successful with her top two hit songs, and I believe she was a more notable artist than some nominated, but I don't think she deserved the win.
For the Video of the Year Award, Camilla's "Havana" was up against "APES**T" by the Carters, "Finesse" by Cardi B and Bruno Mars, "God's Plan" by Drake, "No Tears Left to Cry" by Ariana Grande, and "This Is America" by Donald Glover. "Havana" was nominated for choreography, as well.
I did really enjoy her video -- it was very cute and entertaining. However, I still prefer some of the other videos over hers. For example, I thought "No Tears Left to Cry" was so interesting and different to watch. Ariana also communicated a bigger message with the audience, as did "This Is America" and "God's Plan." Of course, having a bigger message within the video isn't necessarily what makes music videos great.
I just wanted more from "Havana" after watching some of the other videos. Her video was very cute and I think it appealed more to her younger audience in terms of storyline, whereas I felt some of the other music videos nominated were able to reach a greater audience and had more interesting and unique qualities.
I for sure look forward to seeing what she releases in the future, as well as the other artists!
