Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall

Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall
Friends University

As summer comes to an end, we feel a mixture of emotions. We are sad to see the vacations, long days at the pool and lots of free time with friends come to end. We hate to have to leave our high school/hometown friends behind. All our summer becoming nothing but a memory. We regret all the fun things we said we were going to do but never got a chance to do. It feels a bit like summer just started, and now it’s already coming to an end! Our tans are already fading, and the temperature is slowly, but surely starting to cool down. Where did the time go? When will I see my friends again? What will this year bring? These may all be questions you’re asking yourself at this point.

It could be that you’re a freshman heading into the first year of college. You’re unsure of what to expect. You could be like how I was— excited to move on with my life but nervous at the same time. It’s a lot to take in! A new home, school, friends and a new you. You will change a lot this year, hopefully for the better. By the end of the year when you look back, it’s crazy to see the growths you’ve made as a person on your own in life.

Or you could be a returner, like me. Excited to dig into your major, but not excited for the class time that entails. Also, ready to be with your best friends again and make lots of new memories this year. College is a fun and wild ride, but it’s only as fun as you make it.

You could also be an athlete, like myself. Preseason has officially begun and, wow, are you sore. You’ve already spent countless hours dying with your teammates, but you wouldn’t change it for the world. You chose the student-athlete life, and while it may not always be easy, it’s so worth it. The teammates, games, practices, bus rides and memories you make are so worth every tear, sweat and bloodshed.

You could also be involved in something else. Maybe a school club or fine arts program. These are also very exciting times as you are getting started into the school year. You’re excited to work with all the newcomers and start planning your programs and events. After all, this year will be the best year yet!

I’m not sure where you fit at in your school, but regardless we all understand the struggle of switching from summer mode, back to school mode. It may be crazy, hectic and wild at first, but just hold tight, because it will get better. You’ll get back into the swing of things again, just give it time. In the meantime, drink water and get plenty of rest! Don’t forget it’s okay to say no and take some time for yourself. Take care of yourself, but at the same time, go out and make new friends and new memories. Make the most of your four short years here at college. When you look back, make sure you have happy memories, because these are the moments that you will remember forever. Have a great year and welcome back!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
