Buzzfeed's Tasty videos. We’ve all seen them. They are those quick 30-60 second cooking videos could teach just about anyone how to make Nutella cake in a mug. Your friends are constantly posting them, so they're impossible to avoid. They are so hypnotizing to watch, but what happens when you actually attempt to make the recipes? Is there more behind them than meets the eye?
I was never interested in cooking. Sorry Ma, but no matter how many times you explained to me how you made your delicious dinner, I didn’t have the attention span to grasp all of the steps. Online recipes are dull and boring, and full-length cooking videos have unneeded conversation.
Tasty videos have revolutionized cooking, as we know it. They are fun to watch, and fun to make. To prove this, I created a new tradition with my friends. All week we send the videos back and fourth, scheming on which looks the tastiest; (pun intended.) Every Sunday we get together with our chosen food in mind. We go food shopping and we cook our tasty creation together!
We’ve made pizza twists, avocado and cucumber salad, and taco stuffed peppers to name a few. The taco stuffed peppers were my absolute favorite and we were really proud of them even if they weren't as neat as the video!
Here's how they turned out;
You can find the video for them here.
All of the recipes were so simple to make and the recipe video was easy to understand. Each recipe didn’t take longer than an hour to make and there was no confusion in the steps.
One of the most visually appealing aspects of these videos are how crisp and neat they look. They never spill anything and the music that accompanies the videos are also quite pleasant.
The videos are so much fun to watch. Admittedly, I have found myself watching 20 at a time when I have nothing else to do. Why do I watch these videos I don't intend on making them all? Because they are just so satisfying to watch. They make the videos fast, and have clear step-by-step instructions, and they ALWAYS pull apart the end product to get that nice shot where the cheese etc. is all melty... mmmm.
However, these videos are more than just cute, yummy, and fun. Question: How do you take a generation so obsessed with instant gratification and teach them a necessary life skill they don’t want to learn? The answer; well, you need to get them engulfed and interested. You need to approach cooking in a modern way and make it fast. You need to make learning fun and easy, and that’s just what these videos do. Older recipes are sometimes complicated and lack the visual stimuli we crave. Having a live video to refer to allows the chef to say, “That is what it’s supposed to look like!”
The Tasty videos are the first stepping-stone for millennials into learning how to cook. I can personally attest that these little videos have instilled an interest in cooking in me that was never there before. These little videos are much more revolutionary than meets the eye.
