For the past seven-ish years I've had some iteration of a pixie cut. It's gotten shaggy, it's gotten spiky, but the two things I had yet to do were:

1. Grow it back out

and

2. Shave it all off

So, after a few months musing over the idea of going super short I figured "Hey! It's hot! I'm bored! Let's do this thing!" and 45 minutes later, a good friend of mine grabbed her clippers and helped me do the deed.

So, if you want to hear the buzz about getting "the buzz" or you're just wondering "WTF?", here are 13 things I've realized in these past couple weeks since shaving my head.

The first swipe is the hardest

After turning on the clippers and running them right down the center of your head, you're going to have a moment of doubt. Keep going! Don't let the hilarious and completely bizarre thing you see in the mirror get the best of you.

People are going to want to know why

Whether it's out of admiration, concern, or curiosity, people will want to know if the buzz was for a specific reason. "Because I wanted to" is a completely valid answer to this question.

You could totally lead a hit action movie

Whether you would be kicking alien ass or fighting in a post-apocalyptic desert, getting a buzz cut makes you realize how totally, utterly awesome you are. The DMV seems a lot less scary now that it looks like you could be a baddie-fighting, dystopian protagonist.

Some people aren't going to say anything, and that's okay

Whether they don't realize, don't care, don't like it, or just don't know what to say, you may encounter people who don't bring up the haircut at all. Whatever their opinion is, it really doesn't matter as long as you like the way you look.

It takes a little getting used to

Even though I LOVE the fact I cut my hair this short, the first couple days after getting it cut were, well, weird. Getting used to the new texture and look of any haircut is, but especially one as dramatic as this.

Perks? I get to meet myself in the mirror a few times a day and remember that woah, I look good.

It isn't *quite* as low maintenance as you thought

The thing about a buzzcut is the uniformity of the look. That one cowlick in the back that gives you trouble, still gives you trouble, even when it's this short. Hair pomade is still your best friend.

Smaller kids might stare

Although I've definitely become accustomed with small children asking me about my hair and gender ("Are you a boy?" never gets old), getting a buzzcut even throws them for a loop.

A hat has never become more important

Summer in Arizona means one thing: sunburns. After you cut all your hair off, you realize that you have to protect the top of your head from getting burnt. At least you don't have to worry about hat hair!

The first photo you post is a little scary

The "share" button on the first Instagram post with your haircut seems a little intimidating.

You kind of want to keep it this short

While this is by no means the case for everyone, buzzing my hair made me realize that I love this look and could totally keep it— something I never would have realized if I didn't take the leap and cut it in the first place!

It dries INSTANTLY

Giphy

Less than a minute out of the shower, and your hair is already dry!

You have an automatic ice breaker

Meeting new people when you rock a bold haircut means that you automatically have something to talk about, which makes small talk a lot easier.

It really, truly doesn't matter what anyone else thinks

It's your hair, your self-expression, and as long as you like it, it genuinely doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
