My 5 All-Time Favorite Button Poetry Poems

In This Article:

Poetry is what I remembered to be one of the most hated subjects in my high school English class.

When the teacher said, "we're going to be doing a unit on Shakespeare!" It seemed like the whole class just collectively died together.

Some people don't like poetry. But in my honest opinion, they only haven't found the right poem yet.

Button Poetry is a small independent distributor of both Spoken Word Poetry and Printed Poetry.

Their mission statement reads: "Button Poetry is committed to developing a coherent and effective system of production, distribution, promotion, and fundraising for performance poetry."

Button Poetry showcases fantastic talent with poems and poets that will make you laugh and cry. As a long time follower of their Youtube Channel, let me show you my top five poems.

1. Neil Hilborn – Punk Rock John

I absolutely love this poem because it reminds me of when I found many of the bands that got me through high school. It's a reminder that no matter what age you become the music you love is eternal.

2. Sabrina Benaim- "Unrequited Love in 9 Parts"

This poem has personally gotten me through many heartbreaks since it's release just last year. Most of these heartbreaks were due to unrequited love and overall feelings if loneliness. Her imagery and tone in this performance bring tears to my eyes.

3. Rudy Francisco - "To The Girl Who Works at Starbucks"

This poem isn't even about me and I find myself blushing. I love this poem because it isn't technically a love poem, it's a poem that resembles infatuation more than anything.

4. Jesse Parent - "The Parts of Her That Matter"

This poem was added on Button's Youtube Channel recently and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. It's a heartbreaking story but Jesse manages to make you both cry and laugh during this piece. Parts of it brought tears to my eyes.

5. Neil Hilborn - "How do you sleep with an IV in?"

I've been thinking about this poem a lot recently and that's why it's on this list. Letting go of people you have to let go of is hard. It's something I've been having to do a lot in recent weeks. In this poem, Neil takes his then-ex-girlfriend (now wife!) to the hospital for salmonella just as she was moving out the next day. You can hear how troubled he is in this performance in particular.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
