  • Sleep is beautiful.
  • There are some nights when we can go without a moment of sleep with minimal complaint but busy girls know that sleep is important, and without it we wouldn’t function. Don’t disturb us during one of our 15 minute power-naps- you’ll regret it.
  • Leggings are pants.
  • Busy girls live by this simple truth. Leggings are pants, and sweatpants are acceptable. There are days when I have had 10 minutes to get out of bed and into a classroom across campus. Sweatpants and leggings are always there to keep me comfortable during long, busy days and provide an easy transition from pajamas to an outfit for the day.
  • Planning is EVERYTHING.
  • Every night, I pack my book-bag for the next day, plan an outfit, lay out the makeup I’ll need, triple-check my alarms, check my day planner to go over that day and the next day (and possible write some additions), and then I finally get to lay in bed and plan exact times that I’ll be able to eat, nap, go to work, get school work done, and more. If I didn’t plan my days out, I would be a complete mess; all super busy girls know how important planning is.
  • “Have I eaten today?”
  • Yes, it is a TERRIBLE habit to get into, but sometimes super busy girls forget to eat. We get too caught up in “Okay, I’m doing this, then this, then I have to be here at 4”, that we forget to take time to eat, so that we have the energy to keep going. Pro-tip: keep granola bars, pretzels, or something of the sort in your bag. Most professors won’t care if you eat something small in class, and it’s better than not eating at all (which, again, is a horrible habit).
  • What is “relaxing” and how do I do it?
  • My best friend used to have me come over so that he could teach me how to relax; most of the time, I’d end up failing at video games and talking about how much I have to do. When a busy girl gets the chance to relax, you better leave her alone- these chances are few and far between.
  • The alarm frenzy.
  • Busy girls always set multiple alarms. I have an alarm set for 6:30, 6:45, 6:50, 7:00, 7:15, 7:25, and 7:30, knowing that each time I hit “snooze” is 9 minutes. And, I hit snooze to just about every alarm. So, in the mornings, it’s a frenzy because I’ll have an alarm going off every 3-5 minutes. The alarm frenzy is a busy girl’s best friend and worst nightmare.
  • Caffeine is essential.
  • If it’s not coffee or an energy drink, its soda or caffeinated tea. I saw a caffeinated chocolate bar at the store the other day, and if it weren’t $3, I would’ve been all over it. Caffeine helps us to power through our longs days with not enough sleep or too much to get done in a small period of time. Any busy girl will tell you how much we rely on caffeine.
  • The sense of pride at the end of a long, hard day.
  • You know what I’m talking about- as you lay down to sleep, you think back on everything you did that day and feel proud of all that you accomplished. And most importantly, ready to do it all again the next day!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
