Every day, I come across a thread on Twitter, like "Vines as university majors" or "memes as university majors." The business one always has to deal with money. I get that. We deal with a company's money, but there is so much more to it than that.
Corporations sometimes seem like the bad guys in the world, but that's not always true. Corporations are actually the solution to many problems, including but not limited to humanitarian issues for example. What I mean is that a company's money can go a long way for a good cause.
Being a business major to me means looking at the social responsibility your company can identify with and support. Basically, making an impact on an important issue and finding a way to operate through relationships. Undoubtfully, money actually makes the world go round, so the best way to make the world a better place is through money essentially.
In my business classes at James Madison University, I have learned more than financial ratios and how to make your assets, liabilities, and equity sections balance.
I've learned how to create an amazing elevator pitch, perhaps to land you your next job.
I learned how and why relationships are so important through my marketing and management classes.
I've learned what to do when certain machines break down, the cost of it, and opportunity costs that do not even have a dollar value.
I've learned how businesses work in various cultures and what the dos and don'ts are for each country.
Most of all, I have learned how all of these classes come together to build this one general major: business.
The skills in these classes, I believe, will be extremely significant and helpful after college.
In addition, every passion has a business. Whether you have a passion for writing, music, movies, stocks, fashion, cooking, or whatever it is, there's a company and an operational process behind each one. At a music industry company, you need your bands and agents, but also an advertising team, sales team, finance team, and so on. Also, if you're like me and still aren't fully sure about what exactly you want to do in your life, then business is not a horrible option to pick, because as you can see, you can do whatever you want with your career and degree.
So, let's not generalize business; we are not all out there looking for a career on Wall Street, and those who are, there's nothing wrong with that. Just like any other major, we aren't as money-motivated as we seem.
