As a business major, I feel like everyone assumes I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life going into college. People look at business as the "default" or "easy" major. Yeah, it may not be STEM related, but that does not mean it is simple or for dumb people. As a high achieving student in high school, my high achieving classmates declared STEM majors in college. This does not make me less smart though. There are many perks to being a business major and it shouldn't be "frowned upon."
For one, you get a general business knowledge that allows you to change jobs easily in the future if you do not like one. Although my major is Marketing, I will have basic knowledge of accounting, economics, management and finance by the end of my degree. I am someone who might not stay in the same field my entire life. I do not want to get bored and business allows me to change easily without going back to college for another degree. These subjects are useful for the future with my own finances and also with the news. I feel like I understand much more topics politicians are talking about than non-business people I know.
It's hard. None of my classes have been easy and it will only get harder. In my statistics class, the majority of the class will not get a C- which is required by the School of Business. In my accounting class, I've heard many say they are failing. Learning the ins and outs of a companies accounting department isn't easy to learn. There are financial statements, budgeting and ratios. You learn how companies decide on new things to invest on. In economics, you learn why prices are what they are. You understand the economy and everything and anything about GDP. Often, these topics get confusing and intense. Any major in college deals with this and every major is hard.
You should go into business because you want to, not because people think it's the default major. It is not something anyone can do. It is something anyone interested can do.
