This one's for my favorite food, burritos. How can I thank this food for being there when I needed nourishment the most. Whenever I think of burritos a smile creeps it's way across my face. There is just something so delighting and pacifying about sinking your teeth into a nice mouth watering burrito. With all the optional toppings and fix-ins and types of burritos how can one resist? The following is an open letter to all burrito lovers.
What is it about those glorious tortilla wrapped bundles of deliciousness that gets you? Is it the way the cheese melts perfectly once its been mixed and wrapped with the other fix-ins? Is it the never ending choices of tender juicy meats and all the ways they can be prepared? Or perhaps its the right amount of spice that bites your tongue as you bite into that salsa or hot sauce pocket that burns so good as it goes down.
Burritos are for all, they do not have a certain appeal that only a select few find. Even vegetarians can be fond of burritos with all the corn, lettuce, pico de gallo, tomatoes and whatever other non-meat fillers they desire. Whether they're hand-held or buried under a mountain of chile they're guaranteed to satisfy. I find them to be like pizza and sex, even when it's bad it's good, you ever had a 69 cent frozen burrito? For every person there is some type of burrito out there for you. If not, how have Qdoba and Chipotle been so successful? It's definitely not because of their prices.
Day or night, morning or midnight, there is never a bad time for a burrito. Breakfast burritos can shoot a Mexican restaurant or burrito shack to local fame. In Denver, there are multiple Santiago's and Chubby's all over the place and I've yet to see one not be busy whenever I've walked in. Like us humans, every burrito is unique and they come in all different sizes. One of my favorites is what I call the pregnant burrito since it is a burrito with a chile relleno in it...Holy hell! it is amazing! They go great with sides like some tamales or even some chips and salsa, but burritos are also perfectly fine by themselves. With the right ingredients they are an entire meal in itself.
Now sure you might live in a place that doesn't have great Mexican food but as long as you've got a somewhat decent grocery store nearby what's to stop you? You can learn a lot about your cooking abilities and your tastes by making your own burritos, and even expand your taste and cooking skills by finding that perfect burrito just for you. Go crazy, learn about duality by enjoying both simple burritos of just beans and cheese and complex burritos that are smothered and you would need an entire page to write down everything that fits in there.
Now we just need to bring burritos to the desert table more often, and if any of you have figured it out yet and have a good recipe, please let me know! Sure there are crepes which are kind of a french version of a dessert/breakfast burrito but we need more! Now let's all chill out and stop fighting and going crazy over this insane world and just go enjoy some burritos.
