I mentioned briefly in my last article on Daredevil that the character of Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter, better known to comic fans as Bullseye, is one of the most incredible parts of season three. His character background, story arc, and the acting of Wilson Bethel in the role make season three my favorite of all three seasons.
The first thing we discover about Dex is that he's a badass shot (hence his comic book nickname) who can make anything a deadly projectile. As an FBI agent, he single-handedly takes out a squad of criminals armed with only a handgun by ricocheting his bullets off of different objects in the environment. He even takes apart the gun and throws a piece into someone's neck with deadly accuracy. Pretty cool stuff.
Dex isn't just an FBI hardass turned standard psycho Marvel villain, though. As you watch, you start to realize that Dex has some serious mental issues. But you also see that he isn't just wallowing in them like many characters and even real people do, he fights them. You see that everything in his home is clean and in perfect order. He has tapes of his old therapy sessions that he listens to when he's stressed, or having a panic attack or anger outburst.
He wants to do the right thing and be a good person, but he is a broken man. He stalks a girl that he used to work with (at the suicide hotline no less), but only so he can pretend he is not alone and has a companion with a good heart to help him.
His therapist at one point in a flashback tells him, "Your moral compass isn't broken, Dex. It just works better with a North Star to guide you." This then leads into the overarching villain, Wilson Fisk, The Kingpin, aiming to become that North Star to manipulate Dex for his purposes. I don't want to spoil too much more for those who are interested in checking out the show for themselves.
It is an incredibly well written, insanely well-acted story-arc that makes you somehow root for the murderous, psychopathic, stalking-his-love-interest assassin, who is actively opposing one of the coolest superheroes, Daredevil/Matt Murdock himself, who we've been following for 2+ seasons already. That's not even counting his appearance in The Defenders.
All this only serves to remind me that as of this writing, season three of Daredevil might be the last time we see Wilson Bethel's Bullseye in not just the MCU, but in anything, which is undoubtedly a crying shame. If you love Dexter or YOU, and comic-book media, you'll certainly love all of Bullseye's scenes in Daredevil.
