If only it was easy to wake up every day completely confident in yourself and who you want to be.
If only college students didn't feel pressure to fit in to a certain mold, a cookie cutter mold that limits individuality.
Well, let's end these hypothetical situations, and change up our university reality to embrace independence.
Once, when I was five years old my dad taught me a great lesson. He said that I was "cool" in my heart, and that I didn't have to change myself for anybody. Due to the lack of brain complexity at that age, I couldn't really grasp the meaning of cool, but I tried. At the moment, I took it as permission to wear my Britney Spears inspired tight, blue leather pants, a furry heart sweater, and my hammy down light up Sketchers that I constantly stomped my feet to enable. Don't you think I was going to have a solid play date in that outfit? Even though I did rip the edgy, yet girly ,leather pants at my sixth birthday party when I bent down to reach for my piñata candy, the idea of simply being my quirky, weird self always stuck with me.
My dad's lesson was my saving grace, and although I have strayed from the path of my own uniqueness, I always seem to find myself, and I am happiest when I do.
At the end of the day (and I mean every day), no one should ever make you feel embarrassed to be the real you. The people of the world want to see you for who you are, because there are others out there that are meant to complement you.
If we really want to get down to business, let's go through the list of some of the artists who are rooting for your personality to come alive. Headliner and my future husband, Drake, said "you should just be yourself, right now you're someone else." He's a pretty sensitive guy, in touch with his emotions and all, so I would listen to him. The popular late '90s, early 2000s rock 'n' roll band, Audioslave, said to "Be yourself, because that's all that you can do." Two great, very different, artists are rooting for you, and so am I!
Now that you are inspired, it is time to embrace and force yourself to take risks. I challenge you to start your day completely authentic, unplugged, and yourself. If this doesn't improve your overall happiness, than I cannot imagine what change in your life will.
