Everyone has a family that is a mix bag of personalities and personas, and the Friar Family is no different. The buildings of the Providence College campus each have their own unique feel. Students spend so much time in these buildings and become so familiar with them that they almost seem human. The halls of PC are true members of the Friar Family. Let’s introduce you to a few of them:
Bedford Hall
This is your older cousin that just got her own place. She thinks that she is pretty hot, cooking her own meals and stuff. She goes on endlessly about the trials and tribulations of being a “homeowner”: cleaning, decorating, dealing with neighbors — it's all just too much! In reality, she’s in a cushy little apartment that her parents pay for that she hardly has to maintain. She just likes to seem grown up.
Guzman Hall
This is your gross older brother. He just pledged to a fraternity last year and clearly has fully embraced the lifestyle. Your mom wrinkles her nose every time she enters his bedroom because it reeks of dirt laundry and stale Nattie Lite. His whole room just looks kind of rundown and dingy. All his bros come over to hang out on the reg, playing XBox deep into the night (you always ask yourself why never seems to have any real work to do). When you wake up in the morning, your mom is yelling at both of you, wondering how hallway ceiling tiles were knocked out overnight.
Albertus Magnus Hall
Al Mag is your family’s whacky, old grandpa. He’s getting on in years and isn’t what he used to be. He looks aged and a little worse-for-wear on the surface, but he’s still sharp as a tack. His aged exterior houses a bright and active mind that your family wouldn’t be the same without. But sometimes, the things he says just seem to go right over your head.
The Ruane Center for the Humanities
Ruane is your newborn baby brother. All of a sudden, no one has eyes for anyone other than him. He’s beautiful and fresh and just perfect in everyway. Everyone wants to come fawn over him. What does it matter that you’ve been around for way longer and are still accomplishing amazing things? He still has that new-baby smell! Just wait a few years and precious baby brother will age and blend in with the rest of the family.
Concannon Fitness Center
This is your brother that spends far too much time at the gym. His obsession with the place mystifies you. He spends three hours there, every day, when you’re hard-pressed to force yourself to stay there for 45 minutes. You feel inadequate as you pass by him, chugging his protein shakes and doing sit-ups in his room. He makes you want to work out as much as him so you look as fit as he does ... if only that didn’t involve getting off the couch.
Moore Hall
This is your single uncle whose life is in shambles. His bachelor pad is a depressing sight, empty and dilapidated. Your family steers clear of him most of the time, but he’s still family, so you can’t just push him out of your life. You stay at his place when you have nowhere else to go because he’s always available to have guests. He’s a good guy deep down, but he’s not your first choice.
Raymond Hall Dining Hall
Oh Ray. Can’t live with you, can’t live without you. Raymond Hall is your aunt. She works so hard to please the family when they come over for dinner, but she just simply can’t deliver; her food is barely palatable. No one wants to hurt her feelings, but you can’t avoid her Thanksgiving invitation forever. Eventually, you’ll have to come over and wolf down her food without tasting it like it’s medicine.
Harkins Hall
Harkins is the father. Head of the family, he guides and provides for the rest of the family. He does all the business, takes care of the money and even manages to teach you a few lessons in his spare time. He’s the face of your family, and you’re so proud of him. However, he’s also the disciplinarian, and you don’t want to be sent to him for the wrong reasons.
The Smith Center for the Arts
This is your hip, artsy-fartsy cousin. He’s a little bit of a black sheep, but you think he’s pretty cool. When you ask what music he has playing, he just responds, “You probably haven’t heard of them.” He only hangs out with kids that probably have heard of that band. When you see his group of friends in their hip clothing and unique tastes, you question whether you are too cool to hang out with them or not cool enough. He always changes the topic when your father asks for the eighth time what he plans on doing with his degree in cello performance.
McVinney Hall
McVinney is your high-school-aged sister. You’re amazed at how your parents put up with her antics. She’s always loud and boisterous, screeching and cackling with all her friends. And you have no idea how she could possibly get away with having a different boy over every night when you always get caught with your “houseguest” in the middle of the night.
Phillips Memorial Library
The lib. For good times and bad, it’s always there for you. The library is the mother of the family. Being around her means a lot of hard work. Doing chores (studying) comes with the territory when you’re staying with her. Her presence can be stressful and overbearing at times, but you’d never leave her. She keeps you safe place to stay, and you wouldn’t give that up for anything (because otherwise you’d have to go over to visit your Uncle Moore).
