Is Building a Wall Really the Best Solution?

A wall wasn't helpful the first time. Why try again?

Is Building a Wall Really the Best Solution?
PolitiFact

When I first heard the news that a wall will likely be constructed along the Mexican border, I was beyond irritated. As someone who grew up in this area, I've experienced first hand why this is probably the least feasible solution to the immigration "problem," though I don't know if it really is much of a problem. Those who don't know the circumstances well enough shouldn't be allowed to tell us how it needs to be fixed.

Now, I'm not one to write politically very often, and I'm certainly not one who is going to constantly bash on the president of my country. Even though I didn't vote for Trump, out of respect I don't want to speak ill of him. I really want him to be able to run this country well. But spending money on a useless wall seems like a pretty poor way to begin his time in office.

Firstly, I find it ironic that such an entitled man surrounded by privileged politicians is allowed to tell people who struggle every day that they should go back to where they came from. What Trump doesn't seem to understand is that most of these so-called "immigrants" are some of the hardest-working people I've ever met. To say that they are taking jobs away from Americans is a statement that is clearly not backed up by facts. Immigrants take jobs that no American wants. Jobs that most Americans are above, so to speak.

Secondly, a wall is not only utterly useless in the grand scheme of things, it is also an insulting concept to other nations. Wouldn't we be insulted if Mexico or Canada thought a wall was going to keep our people out of their country? Surely we are intelligent enough to find our way around this division. For example, how hard would it really be for someone to get in a boat and get into this country through the Gulf of Mexico? Of course, for some, obtaining a boat would be a difficult task. Still, it's a possibility, and if they were desperate enough, any immigrant could find a way. Just because they don't speak English doesn't mean they are stupid!

Thirdly, the government spends millions if not billions of dollars on border security every year. Why? To keep our borders under control. Now, if this amount of money is being poured into our border, then why in the world do we need a wall? We have a border patrol. We have other methods. There is no method to this madness that suggests a wall is a useful investment.

Lastly, claiming that Mexico should pay for this wall is quite an arrogant and completely ignorant statement. Why should they? We are the ones demanding this wall. They would not benefit in any way from the construction of this division. Trust me when I say that Mexico has their own problems to fix. Why would they be at all concerned about our problems?

I'm not interested in all the statistics and numbers that say why a wall is needed or why it is not needed. I am merely choosing to focus on common sense. This wall is not only useless and a waste of resources, but it is also insulting. It's insulting to those it is meant to keep out and it's insulting to Americans who live in this area.

For those who may not be aware, there is already a wall on the border, and it is as unhelpful as it is an eye-sore. Imagine walking out of school or even out of your home and seeing this mass of metal staring back at you. The media keeps claiming that the immigration problem is growing, but the wall was supposed to help right? So what happened? They don't know. Why? Because research can't tell them how to fix this problem. If they have never bothered to visit the area, what makes them think they know even a sliver about the actual consequences? Because a bunch of numbers said so? That doesn't seem practical to me.

In my hometown, we have a university. A really nice, well-built university, just across the street from the legal border crossing. When the government initially began planning the first wall, the rough draft plans had the wall going right through the middle of the campus. Splitting right down the middle! Thanks to this, they were forced to come look at the area. To survey the surroundings so they know where they can build this wall. Now, this wall is about a mile off from the actual border mark, mostly because the Rio Grande River is the meant to be the border line. All the construction of this wall told us is that our government finds us ignorant and easily manipulated, thinking they can just mold and form our region without really knowing the geography and how it affects our culture.

I'm not suggesting that I agree with all the concept of immigration. For example, I don't believe that immigrants should be allowed to live off of our welfare. I do think our borders need to be controlled because of how many drugs are entering the country.

However, I also don't believe that illegal immigrants deserve to be kicked out of countries by the bus load, being treated as a number rather than a person.

And, in all honesty, no wall is going to stop this trend.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
