Though it already feels as if the end of summer is fast approaching, it's never too late to make plans for a summer getaway! However, when you're on a college student's budget, going anywhere outside of a reasonable driving radius may seem pretty unlikely. But that definitely doesn't have to be the case. These budget airlines make summer vacation easy and affordable!
Frontier
With so many routes to choose from and dirt cheap fares on popular flights, it's no wonder why Frontier is so popular. Their fares start at only $29 and they often run deals for 10-15% off of weekday flights. The website is incredibly easy to navigate and customer service is surprisingly good. Routes are seemingly endless, and new ones are being added almost weekly. However, deals like these do come with a few drawbacks. Checked luggage ranges from $50-$60 round trip and carry ons are $5 more each way. The planes aren't small, but there are more seats than normal to keep fares low, so keep this in mind if you like your leg room.
Spirit
One of the largest budget airlines in the country, Spirit Airlines offers great deals for summer travels. Much like Frontier, Spirit has countless routes to choose from. They fly over 250 flights daily to over 50 different destinations and also run a variety of sales. The current sale is the "Shake It Off Sale" for $19.89 off your flight. (S/O to T-Swift!) With their Free Spirit frequent flier program, fliers are eligible to earn a free one way flight as early as 2,500 miles. Complaints are relatively common, though. In 2015, Spirit had the worst on-time arrival record of 13 U.S. carriers and customers often complain of baggage abuse.
Allegiant
When it comes to ideal summer destinations, Allegiant takes the cake. Though their routes aren't as numerous as Spirit or Frontier, Allegiant Air flies to vacation hotspots like Destin, Florida; Hilton Head, South Carolina; and Honolulu, Hawaii. Though they do charge for every checked bag and carry on, fees are relatively low, starting at $14 each way. They also offer additional savings on hotels, which could make your trip even cheaper! The biggest inconveniences with Allegiant are their 40 lb. limit on luggage, as opposed to the 50 lb. limit on most other airlines, and the fact that many of their routes are only flown two to four days a week.
The next time you find yourself daydreaming of a summer getaway, remember it could be within reach and give these airlines a look! Happy travels!
