OSU's largest philanthropy event, Buckeyethon, is coming up quickly. On February 9th, almost 5,000 Buckeyes will join together in a celebration of children everywhere... and YOU can be a part of it. Here are five things you should know about Buckeyethon.
1. Everything is done For the Kids (FTK)
You've probably heard FTK or For the Kids being said around campus. Buckeyethon's mission is to "create awareness and raise funds for children with cancer." Each team member shows the dedication to the cause by working to raise money that goes towards children being treated in the Hematology/Oncology/BMT Unit at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
2. The money stays local
Money raised by team members (and donated by you!) goes to Nationwide Children's Hospital, located right here in Columbus, Ohio. Nationwide Children's Hospital is a part of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, which promotes the movement "For the Kids."
3. You can meet the children you'll be helping through your donations and involvement
BuckeyeThon works with 17 families and children who are have been affected by pediatric illnesses. These families have gone through, or are currently going through, treatments at Nationwide Children's Hospital. You can meet these families at various Buckeyethon events or check out the kids' online profiles here.
4.Buckeyethon was founded in 1999 and hosted its first Dance Marathon in 2002
The first Dance Marathon raised $32,474. This year we are working towards raising $2 million, which shows how much this movement has grown. Each year offers an opportunity to raise awareness For the Kids. Over $6.5 million has been raised thanks to your help!
5. OSU's Dance Marathon is the largest dance marathon in the country
No, seriously, you read that right. Last year over 5,000 Buckeyes participated in the massive Dance Marathon and ended up raising $1,510,036.39 For the Kids. The Dance Marathon celebrates the lives of children. Even if you are not signed up for the Dance Marathon, you can still contribute to any Team Member's page.
Consider donating now, or even being a part of the Dance Marathon next year! After all, every kid deserves to be a Buckeye.
