Normally I wouldn't jump on the mainstream bandwagon, but when I finished 13 Reasons Why, it triggered me -- except in a good way.
Why good? Because it inspired me to want to speak out about this.
Because when I hear a boy saying that "she was asking for it" in response to being exposed as a rapist, it makes me angry.
Rape culture is not a fictional concept nor is it simply a term created by a bunch of feminists. It manifests itself in various forms; in many incidents less severe than what happened to Hannah Baker. It's shown both on the streets and online. It's shown through cat calling, it's shown through sending women unsolicited nude photos and it's shown everytime a male shouts obscenities when a woman refuses to give them what they want. Rape culture isn't strictly about rape either -- it's referring to any unwanted sexual attention. Bryce Walker's are everywhere; it's the frightening truth. It's the idea that some men believe that they are entitled to have their sexual desires met and that women are in the wrong when they exercise their right to say no. It's believing that when a woman gets sexually assaulted, they must have been the one that did something wrong; just as Bryce said that Hannah was by being in the hot tub with him in a bikin. Surely they must have worn clothing that was too provocative or acted in such a way that led the male on otherwise this wouldn't have happened to them, right? In short, it's victim blaming.
I know this because my mother doesn't want me wearing certain clothing because if something were to happen to me, the police would want to know what I was wearing during or prior to the attack. As if to say the rapist's actions were justified if I showed too much skin. That just screams victim blaming. A lot of males still appear to think this way. They view commenting "hot" along with a few winky emojis under a women's photo as a compliment rather than major disrespect. When a woman wears a pair of short shorts and a crop top, they view that as an automatic invitation.
Whether the woman was wearing a hoodie and sweatpants or she was half-naked stripping in some stingy night club at 2am -- rape or any type of unprovoked sexual attention for that matter is never justified.
