After approximately four years of anticipation, Bruno Mars is back with his album24K Magic. His successful album Unorthodox Jukebox and his unexpected collaborative single with Mark Ronson "Uptown Funk," his fans were left waiting patiently and impatiently for a new album.
After witnessing so many artists come back after an extending amount of time (i.e. Adele) I found myself asking multiple times “Where did Bruno go? He was so good.” When I heard that he made a new single and an album was soon to follow, I felt an utter excitement.
The premiere of the single “24K Magic” was an ideal way to come back and welcome the world to the new, funkier Bruno Mars.
Although, it sounds completely different than the 2010 Bruno who sang “Grenade” and “Lazy Song," it’s pop music with the best aspects of rhythm and blues.
The next single that graced society was “Versace on the Floor”, which has mad Boyz II Men vibes, which I absolutely love. I really respect when an artist has an excellent voice and shows it off with rhythmic runs and sensual lyrics.
While “Versace on the Floor” doesn’t really match in terms of style in comparison to “24K Magic”, it is a song that’s spine chilling and intense. It portrays Mar's talent in the R&B genre and his talent as a vocalist and songwriter.
The first song on 24K Magic is (of course) “24K Magic.” It was probably the best way to open his new album and his unique style.
While the first two singles successfully emulate the entire genre of the album, there are a few jewels on the album that I believe should be recognized and on repeat all day.
Other songs to highlight on this album are “Calling All My Lovelies” and “Too Good to Say Goodbye”. These two songs also match the 90s R&B feel and vibe of the whole album.
Although, I did find myself comparing “Too Good to Say Goodbye” to older artists and songs. It almost reminds me of an old-school Michael Jackson or Al Green, which, again, is amazing.
Not every artist respects and incorporates that kind of music into their own nowadays, so it’s amazing that he took the leap and really stayed true to a classic style while being unapologetically Bruno Mars.
I did not expect Bruno to take this kind of direction, but I’m really glad he did because it brought back the style that I know and love.
If anyone has an obsession with classic R&B and soul music, a lot of his songs will satisfy.
All-in-all, Bruno’s back. After a long wait, he did not disappoint. He brought funky, soulful pop music back and refreshed the music charts with his creativity and talent.
The long wait was, ultimately, too long, but his album did not disappoint at all. Bruno’s back!
