Why A Brownie A Day Keeps the Smiles at Bay

You know what always cheers me up? Food. What am I going to write about? Food. Whenever I got bored at home I always did one of two things: I would watch tv or I would bake. Not exactly sure why, but baking never failed to put me in a good mood. One time I made over 75 cupcakes just for the hell of it. Now my absolute favorite treat to serve people are my infamous Slutty Brownies. Before you ask, no, I do not know why they are named that. I first learned how to make them from my older sister, and after that it was my new go-to dish! I would bring them to school if it was someone’s birthday or if I was bored the night before. I would make them for all my friends at my dance studio. They were always such a hit and everyone loved them. Nothing says joy like a three layered brownie! Recently I have been writing about deeper content, but as a way to lighten the mood and prove that there is brightness even when the world seems dark, I am going to share my recipe, so that everyone can treat themselves to such a tasty dessert.

First up is the list of ingredients! You will need the following:

  • Roll of cookie dough (works best with pre-made dough and not make-it-yourself dough like Betty Crocker, ya know?)
  • Box of brownie mix (Any brand is fine for this)
  • Eggs, Veggie Oil, Water (amount should be listed on back of brownie box)
  • Pack of Double Stuffed Oreos
  • Rectangle cake pan
  • Wax Paper
Now that you have everything you’ll need, the next step is to preheat the oven. Make sure the oven is empty then preheat it to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, you'll need to lay a sheet of wax paper on the cake pan; this assures that the brownies won’t stick to the pan. Once the wax paper is on, remove the cookie dough from it’s wrapping and spread it across the bottom of the pan. After the dough is flattened across the entirety of the pan, you are going to want to grab the Oreos. You will begin to line them up on top of the cookie dough. Try to keep the Oreos as close to each other as possible in order to cover the cookie dough. The next thing you’re going to do is put the pan aside and grab a bowl to mix the brownie batter in. Follow the instruction on the back of the box, mix all the ingredients together, then pour the batter over the cookie dough and the Oreos in the cake pan. I tend to use the spoon I used to mix the brownie batter to gently spread it out, so that it covers the entire pan. All that’s left to do is to put them in the oven and set the timer for approximately 34 minutes. Use a knife to to check the brownies after the time is done. Stick it through the middle and if the knife comes out clean then the brownies are done. Let them stand for about an hour or so then enjoy!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
