It’s that time of year: tissues and cough drops, the slow and steady decline of brain cell counts, Halloween, and Brown College Hauntings.
What better way to spend your weekend before Halloween than going through a haunted house made by UVA students for charity?!
Last year, my first year at UVA, I lived in Brown College and was able to experience Hauntings up close and personal. I have never seen so many people work so hard to make something in my entire life. A few tents are set up to be the main frame of the haunted house, but the rest of the structure is created out of tarps, staple guns, cross beams, and A LOT of duct tape. Everyone helping still had midterms and class, but any and every free moment was spent on the Hill making sure things were ready for Friday and Saturday. It's pretty amazing to see it all come together, and if you're looking for me this week, I'll be on the Hill again.
This year, Hauntings is:
Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24, from 7 to 12 on Monroe Hill
The theme for the haunted house for charity this year is Scary Tales: Are We Out of the Woods Yet? It will be in memory of former Hauntings Chair Kurt Hilburger.
Parents weekend? No problem! Scared parents are the best parents.
Family hour is 7-8, and the haunted horror will be toned down.
Tickets are $5 for one and $9 for two. All profits will benefit:
The Haven: a community space that "enhances our city by providing a centralized location for resource providers, a commercial kitchen, a day haven, a community garden, and a cultural and arts space in downtown Charlottesville."
On Our Own: providing "a number of structured programs to help people develop holistic plans for setting and achieving goals, and leading responsible, meaningful lives."
Also, $1000 will be awarded to any Greek organization’s philanthropy that has the most members in attendance.
“A thrilling and gruesome experience that leaves you disoriented and on-edge for the rest of the night,” third year Sam Y. sums up the event.
So, come and bring your friends to make Hauntings great this year!
