I look across the table and what do I see?
A little boy drinking hot chocolate and staring back at me.
With two forest green eyes, identical to mine
That just happen to see the world as a shrine.
A shrine full of Minecraft, candy, and Star Wars Graphic Tees,
and I wish he would just wear this cute flannel shirt, geez!
I ask him to change and he pulls out the puppy dog face.
Who knew a nine-year-old could put you in your place.
Who knew that it would be so hard to Build-A-Bear,
and then teach a nine-year-old to share
his candy with you even though you’re his sister.
Eventually, you have to pull out the, “hey now mister!”
Throughout the years he holds my hand,
as if I am the only one leading him towards the land.
He listens to everything I say,
and says he wants to be just like me someday.
It scares me how I’m the one,
he looks up to for advice and to have fun.
Because I do make mistakes,
and have had lots of heartaches.
So far, I would say I have done just fine.
After all, he is only nine.
We have so many years left to spend
together as best friends.
