I walk around campus with two Ks and a Psi on my chest. Unless you ask me, you won’t know just how proud I am to wear those letters. I earned those letters, cried for those letters, and of course, paid for those letters. Kappa Kappa Psi is a National Honorary Band Fraternity, and it is definitely an organization for which my love has grown over time. Kappa Kappa Psi is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I couldn’t just make this an open letter to just one person or a few people, so here are my open (short) letters to the brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi.
- To the Brothers of Zeta Zeta,
Y'all are my chapter, my home base, my immediate family. When I was going through the worse moments of my life, no one was there except my brothers. From the alumni to the people I helped initiate just last semester, all of you have played an important role in my life. You’ve all made some contribution to my growth as a brother and as a person, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
- To my Big,
We have had some pretty good memories, and some not so good memories, but through everything, I know that no matter what, you do care. Yes, there were times when I felt like I was pushed to the side, but now I know that you were doing the best that you could with what you were dealt. I’ll never forget when I turned around to see that you would be my Big. Honestly, it was right then that I knew I had to make it into KKPsi. I knew that I couldn’t, under any circumstances, let you down. You had established a reputation for being the hard working, always busy, but always willing to work kind of person, and I knew that I would have some big shoes to fill (no pun intended). Thank you for being there when I needed you, and for cheering me on from afar. I love you, Big.
- To my Adopted Big,
When my Big couldn’t be there due to work or anything else, that’s where you swooped in. Sometimes, you two were both there for my like the Dynamic Duo! I met you at band camp and you put the KKPsi bug in my ear. I’m so glad that you did because man, I love it! You’re a super caring person, and you’ve been my support multiple times. We have had a few bumps in the road, but I’ve always been able to come back to you and we simply start where we left off. You’ve taught me tons of crafty things and tons of life skill things. I’m definitely grateful for that. You’re an awesome person, and an amazing friend, and I’m glad you adopted me! I love you!
- To my Little,
When your VPME told me that I’d be your big, I almost cried. I actually cried when I got home because I was so excited and happy! You are such a strong, bright, and beautiful person. I’ve see you when the world seemed to crash at your feet, and you made it through. You are a fantastic person, and you better not forget it! Also, your art skills are the bomb. I don’t think I could have had a better little! The semester before you, there was someone I had wanted. When I didn’t get him, I was upset for days. Finally, your grand big (my Big) told me “Maybe he just wasn’t right for you. When you get your little, yall will just click. Just wait.” He was right because I couldn’t have asked for better! I am so proud of the brother you’ve become, and I can’t wait to see what else you will bring to the chapter!
- To the Other Three of The DynamiKK Four,
My Line Brothers! You guys were my rocks. Hands down. When it seemed like the world turned against me, I turned around and saw all three of you. It took us some time before we got close, but once we did, it was great! You are all absolutely fantastic in your own ways. CJ, you’re amazing. You’ll do great things. Hold your head up always, love. Tristan, you are such a smart person! Your thoughts, especially the ones you rarely share with others, are incredibly intelligent! You are amazing, and you will do some fantastic things in the future. Heck, you’re doing fantastic things now! Katherine, you have such a big heart. I admire your ability to care so much for people. You were there for me when I felt like no one could understand me. You are so great. Don’t ever let anyone convince you otherwise. We are the DynamiKK Four, and we have grown a lot together. I couldn’t have chosen better LBs! I love yall so much.
- To our Big Brother Chapter,
Epsilon Beta, I have bonded with you guys! Over these years, we have created multiple inside jokes, exchanged awesome ideas, and we have all grown together! I’m so glad that Zeta Zeta has such an awesome big brother chapter! Going out to eat with yall is the best! I always leave the restaurant full of food, and full of great memories! I hope you guys remain successful on your campus for centuries! I love y'all, and Epsilon ZZeta Beta for life!
- To the Spicy Southwest District
The best is most DEFINITELY from the Southwest! I am so happy that I am a part of such an outstanding district! Our district grows strong with every year, and I know we will keep on growing! I have so much love for each chapter in the Southwest! District Convention is an event I always look forward to, simply because it’s that special time of year during which I get to rejoin some old friends and meet some new ones! Keep on keeping on, Southwest!
- To my High School Band Directors (And Band Directors EVERYWHERE)
Mr. Parker, and Mr. Cooper, without yall, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be in college band, and I definitely wouldn’t have joined Kappa Kappa Psi. Both of you contributed heavily to my education, and my growth as a musician. Granted, I’m not the best, but I am improving. Thank you both for instilling in me a precious love for music. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Thank you for every stern word, every punishment, and every horrible exercise and warm up. I pray that you both continue teaching kids how to love music. I hope you inspire them the way you inspired me. I cannot thank you both enough.
Kappa Kappa Psi has made me a better person. I can honestly say without this organization, I have no idea where or who I would be. If you are thinking about taking the chance at joining KKPsi, do it. You’ll find family, friends, heck, maybe even love. I just know that I am in an amazing fraternity (yes, I’m a woman in a frat. We are coed.) and that if you pass up the opportunity to be a brother, you have missed out on a huge part of life!
