Although you graduated last weekend, watching you walk across that stage reminded me of how I felt three years ago when that was me. You won’t admit it, but I’ve become pretty wise in my three years since I graduated high school. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. The transition from high school to college wasn't easy, but it taught me many important lessons.
Never give up on yourself. I know schoolwork can be overwhelming and “Syllabus Day” is definitely going to be the worst. However, don’t let it get the best of you. You’ll figure out your system and you’ll learn what’s best for you. And although it may suck, do the reading. It’ll pay off in the end when it comes to exam day.
Don’t lose sight of your dream. For you, I know this dream is career firefighting and I admire you for already knowing what you want to do. You may hit some setbacks and things may get difficult, but always keep your dream in the back of your mind. Even in your hardest class or when you’re working with the worst professor, just remember your goal. It may feel like it will take forever for you to get there, but you will! Just remember that each step is taking you closer to making that dream a reality.
Now, more than ever, be yourself. College is a weird thing. It’s hard to remember that unlike high school, you don’t know everyone who goes there. In high school, it’s easy to feel like you need to act a certain type of way to “fit in” with the right people. It’s also a time where you feel bound by what people already know about you. However, just remember that these are all new people. Take new chances and go on new adventures. You’ll find people who will take those chances with you.
Always be proud of your achievements. At times, it may seem like someone else is doing something better than you. This is a feeling everyone knows well. In college, this feeling can happen more often than it did in high school. You’ll meet people with different backgrounds than you in certain areas of study. They may be better students or they may be worse students. However, the most important thing is that you are proud of everything that you accomplish. Whether it’s mastering a new aspect of chemistry or finding a new skill for firefighting, always take a minute to be proud of yourself. Don’t let the success of others discourage you.
Lastly, remember to have fun. While studying and grades are important, don’t forget to take some time to do the things that make you happy. Meet up with friends or go on an adventure. College is the time to take yourself seriously during your schoolwork, but you should also remember the things that keep you relaxed. You can make memories both in and out of the classroom.
Congratulations to the Class of 2016! Go out there and find your adventure.
